US President Donald Trump has said he no longer considers artificial intelligence company Anthropic or its chief executive, Dario Amodei, a threat to national security, although he suggested that his assessment may have been different a week earlier.

Dispute Over Foreign Access to AI Models

Trump made the remarks in an interview with “The Axios Show” published on Friday. Asked whether he viewed Anthropic or Amodei as a national security threat, Trump replied that he did not do so now, but may have held that view a week ago.

Senior Anthropic technical staff were scheduled to meet Trump administration officials earlier in the week to discuss a dispute over foreign access to the company’s most advanced artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

Anthropic disabled access to the two models for all users after Trump directed the company to prevent foreign nationals from using them.

Trump Praises Company’s Response

Trump told Axios that Amodei had responded “very quickly” and “responsibly” to the administration’s export control directive.

Trump and other G7 leaders also met technology executives, including Amodei, during a summit in France this week.

The president did not rule out invoking emergency powers under the Defense Production Act against Anthropic. He said he possessed the authority to use several measures but was unsure whether such action would be necessary.

Anthropic Pledges Continued Cooperation

Responding to Trump’s interview, an Anthropic spokesperson expressed gratitude to the administration for its continuing partnership and said the company was working to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.

The spokesperson said Anthropic remained committed to working with the administration toward shared goals, including protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring that the United States maintains its leadership in artificial intelligence.
