An Indian national working at a hotel in Nebraska has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a federal court in Omaha for offences linked to the exploitation of a trafficked minor, in a case that also led to the recovery of two teenage girls from the property.
The man was identified as 27 year old Kavankumar Patel, originally from Gujarat. According to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Nebraska, Patel was convicted on two counts related to the sex trafficking of a minor. Authorities said he will also face deportation after completing his prison term because he was in the United States illegally.
Two Teenagers Recovered From Hotel
Federal authorities said two minor girls, aged 15 and 16, had been brought to the AmericInn hotel in Omaha from outside the state to be sold for commercial sex. After they were recovered from the hotel, the minors told investigators that their traffickers had instructed them to engage in acts with hotel staff in exchange for cheaper room rates so they would not be removed from the premises.
The case, according to prosecutors, exposed not only trafficking activity at the hotel but also the alleged involvement of staff members in the exploitation of the victims. The minors also reported that they had been given little food and were pressured to comply with the directions of their traffickers.

Payments Allegedly Made to Traffickers
Authorities said Patel admitted to using hotel money to pay traffickers in order to engage in acts with one of the minors at the hotel. The district attorney’s office further stated that two other hotel employees also paid the trafficker in connection with one of the minors, while a third employee was involved with the other minor.
Prosecutors said hotel staff had allowed the minors and their traffickers to remain at the hotel for multiple days. During that period, traffickers allegedly posted advertisements for commercial sex and arranged the activity from the property itself.
Patel’s sentence includes 10 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. The report noted that there is no parole in the American federal system.
Case Emerged After Theft Report
The matter came to light on January 6, 2025, when the Omaha Police Department responded to a theft report and officers noticed indications of trafficking. The Homeland Security Task Force and the Omaha Police Department then began an investigation and recovered the two minors, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
Authorities said the prosecution followed the investigation into the conduct of both traffickers and hotel staff at the property. The case has also been cited by officials as a reminder that anyone with knowledge or suspicion of human trafficking should immediately alert law enforcement.
The sentencing marks the conclusion of one part of the case, but the facts set out by federal prosecutors point to a wider breakdown in responsibility at the hotel, where two trafficked teenagers were allegedly exploited over several days before authorities intervened.
