A court has summoned four members of a family, including the complainant’s husband, in a dowry harassment case and recommended disciplinary proceedings against IPS officer Sumit Ramteke, who was serving as ACP of Swaroop Nagar at the time. Copies of the order have been sent to the Director General of Police and the Principal Secretary (Home) for appropriate action.
Complaint Alleged Dowry Harassment and Abuse
The case concerns Nikita Jaiswal, a Geeta Nagar resident who married Delhi-based Ayush Gupta on November 16, 2024. Jaiswal, a software engineer working in Gurugram, alleged that she faced dowry-related harassment and abuse after the marriage.
She lodged an FIR at Kakadev police station on September 21, 2025, naming her husband Ayush Gupta, mother-in-law Alka Gupta, father-in-law Deepak Gupta, her sister-in-law and maternal uncle-in-law Ashwani Sharma. The case was registered under provisions concerning dowry harassment, assault and other alleged offences.
According to court records, the initial investigating officer prepared a charge sheet against the husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law based on the evidence collected and forwarded it to the ACP’s office.
Further Investigation Removed Family Members’ Names
The then ACP of Swaroop Nagar allegedly ordered further investigation and assigned the case to another investigating officer. The second officer subsequently filed a charge sheet only against Ayush Gupta, excluding other family members named during the earlier investigation.
After receiving a court summons, the complainant challenged the charge sheet through her counsel. She alleged that the other accused had been removed from the case without sufficient justification.
The court examined the case diary, investigation records and other material presented before it. It found sufficient grounds to scrutinise the alleged roles of the husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law and maternal uncle-in-law.
The court consequently summoned Ayush Gupta, Alka Gupta, Deepak Gupta and Ashwani Sharma as accused and directed them to appear on July 31.
Court Questions Fairness of Investigation
The court raised concerns about how the further investigation was conducted and questioned the process used to exclude certain accused from the charge sheet. It observed that failure to follow the prescribed legal procedure could create doubts about the fairness and transparency of the investigation.
Taking note of these concerns, the court recommended disciplinary proceedings against Sumit Ramteke for his role in the matter. Its order was forwarded to the state’s senior police and home department authorities.
The case now involves judicial scrutiny of both the dowry harassment allegations and the investigative process that led to the exclusion of some accused. Attention will turn to the response of state authorities and the appearance of the four summoned accused before the court.
