The e-challan system has been activated on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, with traffic authorities beginning automated action against vehicles violating prescribed speed limits and other traffic rules. The system is linked with Automatic Number Plate Recognition, or ANPR, cameras installed along the expressway. These cameras are designed to identify vehicle registration numbers and detect vehicles travelling above the permitted speed. Information captured by the cameras is transmitted to the Delhi Traffic Police e-challan system, allowing action to be initiated against drivers found violating traffic rules.
ANPR Cameras Linked Directly to E-Challan System
The monitoring arrangement is intended to ensure that vehicles travelling at excessive speeds can be identified even without the physical presence of traffic personnel at every location. The ANPR cameras record vehicle details and monitor speed, after which information on suspected violations reaches the traffic police system.
The report states that this camera-based surveillance is now being used to intensify action against speeding vehicles on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. Drivers who exceed the prescribed speed may receive e-challans based on information recorded by the automated system.
Authorities have also advised motorists to pay close attention to speed-limit signboards placed along the route, as permitted speeds may vary across different stretches of the expressway and near state boundaries.
Different Speed Limits Apply on Various Stretches
On normal main expressway stretches, the stated speed limit for cars is 100 km/h. For buses and trucks, the speed limit mentioned is 80 km/h.
Within the Delhi border, lower limits apply. Cars and other light vehicles are permitted to travel at up to 70 km/h, while buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles are subject to a speed limit of 60 km/h.
The information also cautions that these limits may change depending on the particular section of the expressway. Drivers have therefore been advised to follow roadside speed-limit signs rather than assume that a single limit applies throughout the entire corridor.
