Rohtak: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked an Income Tax Officer in Haryana’s Rohtak for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000. The officer, identified as Hemant Kumar Nain from the Income Tax Commissionerate, had reportedly concealed his identity while demanding a bribe related to an Income Tax Notice issued to a 62-year-old man.
Despite being caught red-handed, Nain was not arrested as he developed a medical condition following the CBI’s action. A case was registered against him on March 9.

According to the complaint filed by the elderly man’s daughter, her father received an Income Tax notice for the financial year 2019-20 and assessment year 2020-21. He had submitted his response via the online portal on January 28.

On February 5, the complainant’s father received a WhatsApp call from someone claiming to be Sanjay Kumar from the Income Tax Office in New Delhi. The caller warned him that a demand notice of Rs 1 crore was about to be issued. When the elderly man asked the caller to discuss the matter with his daughter, the caller allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh to drop the notice and close the case. After negotiations, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 2 lakh, and the caller suggested the payment be made via hawala or handed over in Delhi. Eventually, the accused agreed to collect the money from the complainant’s father at Netaji Subhash Place in New Delhi.
CBI Trap and Raid
The CBI laid a trap at the agreed location and caught Nain accepting Rs 50,000 in bribe. Investigations later revealed that he had been using the alias Sanjay Kumar to conceal his real identity.
Following the arrest, CBI officials conducted searches at Nain’s residence and offices in Rohtak and Sonipat, Haryana. The searches led to the recovery of crucial documents and electronic evidence. Further investigation is underway.
