Scammers are exploiting anxiety over West Asia tensions to target consumers in Himachal Pradesh with a new LPG booking fraud, posing as gas agency representatives and urging people to make advance bookings through unsolicited calls, messages and links.

Fraudsters Use Fuel Supply Fears

According to police inputs cited in the report, the scam usually begins with a call or text message from individuals claiming to represent a gas agency. They warn of an impending shortage of LPG cylinders due to instability in West Asia and ask consumers to secure their supply through advance booking.

The message is designed to create panic, suggesting that failure to act immediately could leave consumers without access to essential fuel. If recipients hesitate, scammers increase the pressure by claiming limited stock and threatening to divert supply to other customers.

Victims are then sent a link under the pretext of booking confirmation. Clicking it can expose them to cyber threats, including the theft of personal data, banking credentials, passwords and access to contact lists.

Authorities have reiterated that legitimate LPG agencies do not process bookings through unsolicited calls or unknown links. Consumers have been advised to rely only on official platforms and verified distributors for cylinder bookings. They have also been warned that sharing OTPs, bank details or clicking suspicious URLs can lead to immediate financial compromise.

Swift Reporting Can Help Freeze Transactions

Law enforcement officials have stressed the importance of reporting such cases quickly. Victims have been urged to report incidents within the first three hours, a critical period that can improve the chances of freezing fraudulent transactions and tracing the perpetrators.

The report said the rise of such scams reflects a broader surge in cybercrime. Himachal Pradesh recorded 18,706 cybercrime complaints in 2025, up from 12,249 in 2024 and 8,077 in 2023, showing how digital fraud is evolving alongside current events to exploit public vulnerability.
