New Delhi | Telegram has received a major reprieve after temporary restrictions imposed ahead of the NEET-UG re-examination were lifted, allowing most of the platform’s services to resume across India. Users are once again able to send and receive messages normally, and the application has been restored on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. However, Telegram’s message-editing feature will remain unavailable until June 30 as part of continuing precautionary measures.
The restrictions were introduced last week amid concerns over the security and confidentiality of the NEET-UG re-examination process. Authorities feared that messaging platforms could potentially be misused for the circulation of examination-related material, including question papers and other sensitive information. As a preventive measure, certain Telegram services were temporarily restricted until the completion of key stages of the examination process.

Following the easing of the restrictions, a large number of users reported that Telegram’s core messaging functions had returned to normal. Individual and group chats are once again operational, enabling users to communicate without significant disruption. However, the message-editing feature remains disabled. Officials have indicated that the restriction is intended to prevent any alteration of potentially sensitive information while examination-related monitoring and verification processes continue.
Technology experts note that disabling message editing is an unusual but targeted measure. The feature can allow users to modify previously sent content, which may complicate efforts to track the original version of messages during investigations or audits. By temporarily suspending editing capabilities, authorities may be seeking to preserve the integrity of digital communication records during a sensitive period.
Although services have largely been restored, some users continue to experience difficulties accessing chats, downloading files, or sending messages. Experts suggest that such issues may stem from server synchronization delays, cached data, or outdated application versions. In many cases, users have reported that updating the app or restarting it has resolved the problem.
Android users have been advised to check the Google Play Store for the latest Telegram update and install it if available. After updating, users are encouraged to completely close and reopen the application. Similarly, iPhone users are being advised to download the latest version from the App Store and restart the app to ensure proper connectivity.
Cybersecurity specialists say the episode highlights the growing role of digital platforms in examinations, recruitment processes, and other competitive assessments. Governments and regulatory authorities are increasingly adopting additional safeguards to prevent the misuse of online communication channels during high-stakes examinations.
Renowned cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh has observed that examination-related offences are no longer limited to traditional paper leaks. According to him, organized groups increasingly exploit encrypted messaging platforms, social media channels, and digital networks to coordinate illicit activities. He believes that stronger technological monitoring, greater platform accountability, and public awareness are essential components of protecting the integrity of major examinations.
The restoration of Telegram’s services has brought relief to millions of users who rely on the platform for personal communication, business collaboration, educational discussions, and community engagement. Nevertheless, the continued restriction on the message-editing feature until June 30 signals that authorities remain cautious about potential misuse during the examination period.
As the situation evolves, further reviews are expected to determine whether the remaining restrictions can be lifted. For now, Telegram users can access most of the platform’s functionality, but they will need to operate without the ability to edit messages until the precautionary measures officially expire.
