Ransomware Attack On AIIMS? Top Medical Institute Server Down, Services Hit

NEW DELHI: The server used by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi was down for about nine hours on Wednesday, severely impacting hospital services.

AIIMS, New Delhi, which utilises the National Informatics Centre’s (NIC) eHospital server, was offline, which severely impacted outpatient and inpatient digital hospital services such as smartlab, billing, report production, the appointment system, etc.

The server of Delhi AIIMS was reportedly down owing to a probable ransomware assault, and the situation has been reported to cybercrime and other relevant departments.

According to insiders, the hospital’s system contains extremely sensitive information pertaining to the healthcare records of the Prime Minister, the President, the former Prime Minister, and other prominent ministers.

The hospital administration stated that steps are being taken to restore digital services, and assistance is being sought from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team and the National Informatics Centre.

Authorities further stated that AIIMS and NIC administration will take precautions to prevent future attacks of this nature.

In a statement issued in the evening, the hospital said that the National Informatics Centre, which is working to restore the system, has informed that this may be a ransomware attack.

“Measures are being taken to restore the digital services and support is being sought from Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and National Informatics Centre,” the statement read.
