Pune. Political activity in Maharashtra intensified after Mahadev Vilas Balgude, who had served as the state head of the social media wing of NCP (SP), was arrested for allegedly posting objectionable content online. The case is linked to the circulation of a morphed image of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and posts allegedly showing sympathy towards Naxal elements.
The arrest was carried out in Pune district’s Pimpri-Chinchwad area, where cyber police took the accused into custody. He was produced before a court on Friday, which remanded him to six days of police custody. The development has raised serious concerns at both political and cyber-security levels.
What is the case about
According to the complaint, the accused operated Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts under the name ‘Mahadev Balgude’ and shared multiple controversial posts between April 3 and April 20. These included a morphed image of the Chief Minister, allegedly intended to damage his public image.
Additionally, some posts reportedly referred to a top commander of a banned Maoist organization, indicating sympathy. One of the most serious allegations is that the accused posted content allegedly inciting people to throw a slipper at the Chief Minister—an act considered a threat to public order.
After the complainant noticed the posts, an FIR was registered on April 22, and an investigation was initiated.

Legal provisions invoked
The case involves several serious sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. These include charges related to defamation, intentional insult with the intent to provoke breach of peace, statements leading to public mischief, and acts prejudicial to the unity and integrity of India.
In addition, Section 66C of the Information Technology Act—pertaining to identity theft and misuse of digital accounts—has also been applied. Legal experts state that the combination of these provisions elevates the matter from a social media dispute to a serious criminal case, with the possibility of stringent punishment.
