The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has introduced the Digital India Internship Scheme, an initiative aimed at giving graduate and postgraduate students in technology, engineering and management practical exposure through live projects linked to the Digital India programme. The internship is being implemented by the National e-Governance Division, a part of the ministry, and will be offered in New Delhi.

Scope and Duration of the Scheme

The internship has been designed to help students understand the functioning of e-governance while contributing to ongoing digital transformation work. The minimum duration has been fixed at two months and may be extended to three months depending on a candidate’s performance and the requirements of the ministry.

A total of 29 internship slots are available across 23 different areas. The scheme is open to students pursuing studies in specified disciplines, with the structure indicating a targeted intake across technical, legal, and economics and statistics backgrounds.

Stipend and Academic Conditions

The ministry has said interns will receive a stipend of Rs 10,000 per month, subject to satisfactory performance and certification by the supervisor or mentor. Certificates will also be issued on completion of the internship, provided the report submitted by the intern is countersigned and accepted by the competent authority.

Payment of the stipend will be made after completion of the internship and only after submission of a report accepted by the ministry. Applicants must be Indian students studying at a recognised university in India and must have secured at least 60 per cent marks in their last held degree or certificate examination.

Restrictions and Exclusions

The scheme makes clear that students in the last semester, or those who will pass out in summer, will not be eligible. Only students in the previous one year of their course can apply. It also states that meeting the minimum qualifications will not guarantee selection, and preference may be given to candidates with exposure in the intended internship area, stronger academic records, or higher qualifications, depending on need.

The ministry has also underlined that the internship will not amount to employment or an assurance of future employment. No travel allowance or daily allowance will be paid for attending the personal interview. Interns will not be allowed to claim intellectual property rights over work done during the internship and will be required to maintain strict confidentiality of the ministry’s intellectual property.

The conditions further state that interns may not interact with or represent the ministry before third parties unless specifically authorised depending on their role and responsibilities. They are also barred from interacting with or representing the ministry before the media, whether print or electronic.
