A major cybercrime case has been reported in Hussainganj, Lucknow, where a man named Vikram Chopra and his family were targeted by hackers. According to the FIR, filed on February 28, 2025, unknown cybercriminals hacked into multiple mobile phones belonging to Vikram and his family members on January 17, 2025.

How the Cybercrime Unfolded

Vikram Chopra, a resident of Sarvapalli Mall Avenue, Lucknow, reported that he and his family experienced suspicious activities on their mobile devices. The criminals not only gained unauthorized access to their phones but also attempted to misuse their personal data and gallery files.

As per Vikram’s complaint, his family members received threatening messages, hinting at blackmail and further digital harassment. Concerned about his privacy and safety, Vikram promptly reported the issue to the Cyber Cell on January 20, 2025, and later escalated it to the Chief Minister’s grievance portal.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Hussainganj police registered an FIR under Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, 2008, which deals with identity theft and fraudulent digital access.

The investigating officer assigned to the case is Inspector Shamsher Bahadur Singh, who will be leading the inquiry into the hackers’ identity and modus operandi. The FIR mentions that the case has been officially logged and a thorough investigation is underway.

Prof. Triveni Singh, Ex-IPS and Cybercrime Expert, stated:

“Such intrusions are possible through sophisticated malware, including APK files and OS-specific spyware. Devices can be compromised via SMS, WhatsApp messages, email attachments, or even physical intrusion. Identifying the source of infection or the perpetrators requires deep malware forensics. Given the current limitations in police capabilities, law enforcement must seek assistance from private malware analysis experts to effectively tackle such cyber threats.”

The Growing Threat of Cybercrime

This incident is yet another reminder of the rising cyber threats in India. The misuse of digital technology to breach personal security is becoming more frequent, and authorities are urging people to take necessary cyber hygiene measures such as:

  • Avoiding unknown links and suspicious emails
  • Regularly changing passwords
  • Enabling two-factor authentication
  • Reporting cyber frauds immediately to law enforcement agencies

With cybercriminals becoming more sophisticated, the need for stronger digital security measures and strict law enforcement is greater than ever.
