JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has warned that artificial intelligence is making cyber threats more dangerous by exposing additional vulnerabilities in digital systems, even as the technology may eventually strengthen cyber defences. His comments came as the banking giant tests Anthropic’s newly launched AI model, Mythos, amid growing concerns over its cybersecurity implications.

Dimon Says AI Has Made Cybersecurity ‘Harder’

Speaking during JPMorgan’s earnings call, Dimon said artificial intelligence has complicated cybersecurity efforts for businesses and institutions.

He stated: “AI’s made it worse, it’s made it harder.” According to Dimon, while AI may later offer stronger defensive tools, at present it is creating “additional vulnerabilities” that organisations must urgently address.

Dimon’s remarks highlight increasing concern among major financial institutions over how advanced AI tools can be leveraged by threat actors to identify software weaknesses more efficiently than traditional hacking methods.

JPMorgan Testing Anthropic’s Mythos AI Model

JPMorgan is currently testing Anthropic’s Mythos model as part of its broader cybersecurity and AI strategy. Anthropic introduced Mythos in limited preview earlier this month, describing it as one of its most advanced AI systems for coding and autonomous tasks.

When asked specifically about the tool, Dimon referred to Anthropic’s disclosures regarding the model’s vulnerability discovery capabilities.

He said: “It shows a lot more vulnerabilities need to be fixed.”

Anthropic has stated that Mythos has identified thousands of vulnerabilities in software during testing, prompting the company to restrict access to a select group of companies rather than releasing it publicly.

US Officials Raise Alarm Over AI Cyber Risks

Concerns surrounding Mythos have extended beyond private industry. Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reportedly held urgent discussions with major U.S. bank CEOs regarding the cybersecurity risks associated with Anthropic’s latest AI model.

Government officials are said to be concerned that AI systems capable of autonomously detecting and exploiting vulnerabilities may introduce systemic risks to the financial sector and broader digital infrastructure.

The release of Mythos has also reportedly prompted conversations between U.S. officials and major technology leaders over AI safety and cyberattack preparedness.

Cybersecurity Remains a Full-Time Priority for Banks

Dimon emphasised that JPMorgan continues to invest heavily in cybersecurity infrastructure to defend against emerging threats.

He stated: “We spend a lot of money. We’ve got top experts. We’re in constant contact with the government.”

The JPMorgan chief added that protecting banking systems from cyber threats remains a constant challenge, particularly as AI tools evolve rapidly and create new attack vectors for malicious actors.
