The East District Police conducted a four-day special operation, ‘Operation Aaghat’, to curb street crime and other criminal activities, resulting in action against 151 accused persons and alleged anti-social elements. The drive was conducted from August 17 to 20, targeting illegal arms, narcotics, vehicle theft, robbery, snatching, illegal gambling and other offences. Police also claimed to have solved several cases and recovered stolen vehicles and weapons.
According to police, the operation focused on preventing street crimes, cracking down on people involved in possessing or supplying illegal weapons, and identifying wanted and habitual offenders. Teams carried out checking drives, raids and surveillance operations across different areas of East Delhi during the four-day campaign.
29 Arms Act Cases, 29 Arrested
During the operation, police registered 29 cases under the Arms Act and arrested 29 accused persons for allegedly possessing or dealing in illegal weapons. Pistols, country-made firearms, cartridges and knives were reportedly recovered from their possession.
Action was also taken against alleged drug trafficking. Four cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, leading to the arrest of four accused persons. Investigators are examining the source of the recovered substances and checking whether the accused were connected to a wider supply network.
27 Stolen Bikes and Scooters Recovered
As part of the checking drive against vehicle theft, police claimed to have solved 16 cases involving stolen vehicles. A total of 27 motorcycles and scooters were recovered, while nine people were arrested in connection with vehicle theft and related offences.
Police are questioning the accused to determine where the stolen vehicles were being disposed of and whether other people were involved in the alleged network. The recovered vehicles are also being matched with details of previously registered theft cases.
Robbery and Snatching Cases Solved
The operation also resulted in arrests in robbery cases. Three accused persons allegedly involved in robberies were arrested, and six stolen motorcycles were recovered from them. According to police, the arrests helped in solving nine robbery cases.
Five more accused persons were arrested in connection with snatching incidents. Investigators used CCTV footage and other leads to trace nine alleged snatching cases, including three cases involving the snatching of gold chains.
In another theft case, two accused persons were arrested and sent to judicial custody. Police are now checking their previous criminal records and investigating whether they may have been involved in other offences.
32 Gambling Cases, 63 Held
Illegal gambling operations were also targeted during ‘Operation Aaghat’. Police conducted raids at suspected gambling locations and registered 32 cases under the relevant gambling laws. A total of 63 people were allegedly caught at the spots, with ₹23,131 recovered during the action.
The police also intensified surveillance on proclaimed and habitual offenders. Nine proclaimed offenders were arrested during the campaign.
Officials said the special drive was aimed at strengthening surveillance over criminal activities in vulnerable areas and improving control over street crime. Investigators are continuing to examine the cases registered during the operation and are checking whether the arrested accused have links to other criminal activities or wider networks.
The police are also analysing the evidence collected during the raids, including recovered weapons, stolen vehicles and CCTV footage, to identify additional suspects and establish the full extent of the alleged offences.
