CBI Books Two Officers in Disproportionate Assets Cases

Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against a Central Goods and Services Taxes (CGST) officer for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets worth Rs 78.63 lakh. The accused, H Kumar, superintendent of CGST (Bhiwandi Commissionerate), has been booked by the CBI’s anti-corruption branch following a complaint from an additional superintendent of police. Based on this, an FIR was lodged on Friday.

According to the FIR, Kumar illicitly enriched himself between June 2021 and August 2023, with assets exceeding his known sources of income by 358.45%. Investigators also found that his wife had allegedly abetted him in committing the offence. The accused officer has been booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code for criminal misconduct and illicit enrichment, while his wife has been charged with abetment in the crime.

Former Defence Accounts Officer Also Under Probe

In a separate case, the CBI has also booked S Jha, a former accounts officer with the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (PCDA), Indian Navy, Mumbai, for similar allegations. The investigation revealed that Jha had allegedly amassed disproportionate assets worth Rs 83.55 lakh between April 2008 and March 6, 2023. His assets exceeded his known sources of income by 58.45%.

The case against Jha was initiated following a complaint from a CBI official who verified the allegations. The PCDA oversees payments, accounting, and internal audits for the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard.

Both cases highlight the CBI’s ongoing efforts to curb corruption and illicit financial gains by public servants. Investigations are underway to uncover further details in these corruption cases.
