Five people have been arrested in Noida for allegedly posing as GST officials and extorting ₹29 lakh from a GST consultant, police said. The entire amount has been recovered, including ₹24.50 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery worth ₹4.50 lakh. Two cars, seven mobile phones and uniforms allegedly used during the crime were also seized.
Central Noida DCP Shailendra Kumar Singh said the incident took place on July 20 when the GST consultant was travelling in his car with his pet dog and laptop. The accused allegedly intercepted his vehicle near S Aspire Society by blocking its path with their car. They then allegedly entered his vehicle while posing as GST officials and threatened him over supposed fake e-way bills linked to two firms.
₹29 Lakh Allegedly Demanded After Threat of Jail
According to police, the accused allegedly threatened to send the victim to jail in connection with the GST matter and demanded ₹29 lakh. The money was later brought in cash by the victim’s brother. After receiving it, the accused allegedly left the victim along with his car and fled.
The investigation found that the alleged main accused, Kashish Chauhan alias Ishu, already knew the victim. Police said the two had been acquainted since 2021 and Chauhan allegedly knew that the victim was engaged in GST-related work, which was then used to target him.
Police further said the accused used a police sub-inspector’s uniform and a Delhi Civil Defence uniform while carrying out the alleged offence. The uniforms, along with the two cars and seven mobile phones, were recovered during the investigation.
Five Accused Identified, None Was Police Personnel
Police identified the arrested accused as Kashish Chauhan alias Ishu, Rajesh Pawar, Vivek Sharma, Ankit Shahi and Anshul.
According to police, Chauhan is employed as a DCPO, or Driver-cum-Pump Operator, at Yashobhoomi in Dwarka, Delhi. Rajesh Pawar is associated with Delhi Civil Defence, while Vivek Sharma had worked at Escort, Manesar, Ballabhgarh.
Police clarified that none of the accused involved in the incident is a police personnel.
Investigators said the accused were identified with the help of surveillance, CCTV footage and local intelligence. They were arrested near the ISKCON Temple on Jalpur Road.
Entire Extorted Amount Recovered
Police said the entire ₹29 lakh allegedly extorted from the victim has been recovered. This included ₹24.50 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery valued at ₹4.50 lakh.
The two cars allegedly used in the offence, the police sub-inspector and Delhi Civil Defence uniforms and seven mobile phones were also recovered.
Police are now verifying the criminal antecedents of the accused.
