A social media reel recorded while a woman was seated on the Superintendent of Police’s (SP) chair at the SP office auditorium in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya district sparked controversy after the video went viral online. Following police intervention, the woman publicly apologised, removed the video from social media, and deleted her Instagram account. Police said the matter was resolved after obtaining a written apology and issuing a strict warning against repeating such conduct.
According to available information, a farewell ceremony for a sub-inspector posted at Dibiyapur police station and other police personnel was held on Tuesday at the auditorium of the SP office. Family members of the police personnel were also present at the event. After the programme concluded and most attendees had left the hall, the daughter-in-law of a sub-inspector allegedly sat on the SP’s chair, recorded a reel while rotating on the chair, and later uploaded the video to Instagram.
The video began circulating widely on social media on Wednesday, drawing the attention of the police department. Senior officials took cognisance of the matter and directed appropriate action. The family stated that as soon as they became aware of the incident, the woman immediately deleted the reel from her social media account.

As the controversy grew, the woman released a public video apologising for her actions. She said that after the programme had ended, she sat on the SP’s chair and recorded the reel without any improper intention before uploading it online. She acknowledged her mistake, expressed regret, and assured that she would not repeat such an act in the future.
Following police intervention, the woman also deleted her Instagram account, which reportedly had around 16,000 followers. Authorities obtained a written apology from her, in which she undertook to respect the dignity of government offices and public institutions in the future.
Police said the issue was related to maintaining the dignity of a public office and the decorum of a government institution. After counselling the woman and obtaining her written apology, she was let off with a warning. As of now, no criminal case or other punitive legal action has been reported in connection with the incident.
The episode has once again highlighted the growing trend of creating social media reels at government premises and other public institutions. Similar incidents involving videos recorded at police stations, railway stations, government offices, and other sensitive locations have surfaced in recent months, often requiring administrative intervention.
Experts say that in the pursuit of social media popularity, many people overlook the importance of respecting rules and maintaining decorum at government offices and public institutions. Depending on the circumstances, authorities may respond with warnings, administrative measures, or legal action in such cases.
For now, the Auraiya incident has been resolved after the public apology and the removal of the social media content. Police have made it clear that any similar incident in the future may invite appropriate action in accordance with the law and departmental procedures.
