Redmond | Microsoft has fixed a technical bug affecting Windows Server 2016 that was preventing the installation of June 2026 security updates on multiple systems. The issue had been causing persistent errors such as 0x80070002 (ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND), disrupting update deployment processes for IT administrators.
According to the company, the problem primarily affected Windows Server 2016 systems that were not fully up to date. Devices attempting to install the KB5094122 security update were experiencing failures, particularly when the previous month’s KB5087537 update had not been installed. Microsoft has now confirmed that the issue has been resolved, and affected devices should be able to install updates normally.

The information was shared through a Microsoft admin portal service alert, which noted that some systems were encountering file-missing errors during the June 2026 security update installation process. The issue was also corroborated by reports from IT administrator communities, where users highlighted repeated installation failures across multiple environments.
Investigations revealed that the problem was not entirely isolated to Windows Server 2016, as similar update-related glitches have recently been observed across the Windows ecosystem. In recent months, Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 have also faced installation errors and system stability issues linked to security updates.
In a separate incident, Microsoft had previously fixed a Windows 11 issue affecting the May 2026 security update, where installations failed due to insufficient free space in the EFI System Partition (ESP), causing automatic rollbacks on affected systems.
Earlier in June 2026, Microsoft also acknowledged that some Windows devices were experiencing installation errors such as 0x80073712 and 0x800f0993, particularly on systems recently upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2.
Similarly, Windows Server 2025 had faced a serious bug where systems booted into BitLocker Recovery mode after installing the April 2026 update. Additionally, some devices experienced installation failures when updates were deployed using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA).
Microsoft stated that with the latest fix for Windows Server 2016, the KB5094122 security update should now install without interruption on previously affected systems. The company also confirmed that users who faced installation failures earlier should no longer encounter issues when retrying the update process.
However, Microsoft advised IT administrators to keep systems regularly updated to avoid dependency-related errors in the future. Experts believe this incident highlights the complexity of patch management within the Windows Server ecosystem, where missing intermediate updates can trigger large-scale installation failures.
The company is also reviewing other related Windows update issues, including problems affecting Office application launches and system boot stability. Microsoft reiterated that it is continuously working to improve the reliability and consistency of its security update process to minimize disruption for enterprise users.
