Police in Karnataka’s Belagavi district have arrested nine people, including a doctor and individuals linked to forensic procedures, after an investigation into the death of 46-year-old former serviceman Sandeep Manjaragi allegedly revealed a conspiracy tied to nearly ₹2 crore in insurance benefits. What was initially treated as a road accident followed by a medical death has now become a criminal case involving alleged manipulation of records, medical processes and financial motives.

Manjaragi was involved in a two-wheeler accident on March 13 and was admitted to a government hospital in Hukkeri. According to investigators, his condition was stable enough for police to record his statement, and he did not file any complaint regarding the accident.

Digital Trail Raises Suspicion

The case took a turn after Manjaragi was shifted to another medical facility by family members, where he later died during treatment. Initial reports linked the death to medical complications following the accident, but police later found inconsistencies in the timeline, treatment records and communications among people connected to him.

Investigators said a WhatsApp status became a key lead that prompted them to re-examine relationships and communications linked to the deceased. The digital trail reportedly revealed connections that were not evident during the initial inquiry.

Police then scrutinised call records, electronic communications and financial documents. Investigators allege that the victim’s wife and one of his close associates were involved in a conspiracy motivated by the prospect of securing insurance payouts.

Medical and Forensic Records Under Probe

The conduct of certain medical and forensic personnel has also come under scrutiny. Police allege that attempts were made to influence or manipulate parts of the treatment process and later forensic documentation.

Investigators examined hospital records, expert opinions and laboratory reports before arresting a doctor and individuals associated with forensic procedures. Authorities are now looking into whether medical and forensic processes were misused to conceal the alleged conspiracy.

Officials believe the case involved coordinated planning and not a routine accidental death. The arrests have widened the scope of the investigation beyond the immediate family and close associates of the victim.

Insurance Policies, Financial Records Examined

Police are examining insurance policies, bank transactions and financial records to determine whether plans had been made in advance to claim benefits after Manjaragi’s death. The movement of funds and communications among the accused are also being analysed.

Cyber and financial crime expert Prof. Triveni Singh said digital evidence often reveals hidden connections and motives in complex investigations. He noted that messaging platforms, social media activity, mobile phone records and electronic communications can provide critical leads in cases involving financial motives and organised planning.

Forensic analysis of electronic devices and financial documents is still underway. Investigators are also checking whether more individuals played supporting roles in the alleged conspiracy. Further findings may determine whether additional arrests or charges follow in the case.
