Aizawl | The Election Commission of India (ECI) has called for heightened vigilance against illegal migrants and fraudulent practices during the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Mizoram, underscoring the sensitivity of the exercise in a State that shares a long and porous international border.
The directive came during a review meeting held in Aizawl on Monday as part of a two-day visit by senior Election Commission officials to assess the progress of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the northeastern State. The exercise is aimed at updating voter lists and ensuring that only eligible citizens are included while preventing ineligible individuals from being enrolled.

During the meeting, election officials reviewed the status of the revision process, examined measures already implemented at the ground level, and discussed strategies for completing the exercise within the prescribed timeline. The review brought together district election authorities, electoral registration officers, assistant electoral registration officers, booth-level officials and other personnel involved in the electoral roll revision process.
The Election Commission stressed that the preparation of electoral rolls remains one of the most critical responsibilities in a democratic system because it forms the foundation of free and fair elections. Officials were advised to maintain a high level of scrutiny while processing applications and verifying records, particularly in areas located close to international borders.
Mizoram shares boundaries with both Bangladesh and Myanmar, making voter verification a particularly sensitive issue. Concerns over illegal migration have periodically surfaced in the State due to geopolitical developments and cross-border population movements. Election authorities emphasized that vigilance during the revision exercise is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Officials participating in the review were instructed to strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and the requirements laid down under the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Discussions during the meeting also focused on strengthening coordination among field-level officials. Participants at the meeting were also asked to remain proactive in addressing logistical and operational challenges that may arise during the verification process. Particular emphasis was placed on mobility, field inspections and regular monitoring of revision activities to ensure consistency in implementation.
