Aizawl | The Election Commission of India (ECI) has called for heightened vigilance against illegal migrants and fraudulent practices during the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Mizoram, underscoring the sensitivity of the exercise in a State that shares a long and porous international border.

The directive came during a review meeting held in Aizawl on Monday as part of a two-day visit by senior Election Commission officials to assess the progress of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the northeastern State. The exercise is aimed at updating voter lists and ensuring that only eligible citizens are included while preventing ineligible individuals from being enrolled.

During the meeting, election officials reviewed the status of the revision process, examined measures already implemented at the ground level, and discussed strategies for completing the exercise within the prescribed timeline. The review brought together district election authorities, electoral registration officers, assistant electoral registration officers, booth-level officials and other personnel involved in the electoral roll revision process.

The Election Commission stressed that the preparation of electoral rolls remains one of the most critical responsibilities in a democratic system because it forms the foundation of free and fair elections. Officials were advised to maintain a high level of scrutiny while processing applications and verifying records, particularly in areas located close to international borders.

Mizoram shares boundaries with both Bangladesh and Myanmar, making voter verification a particularly sensitive issue. Concerns over illegal migration have periodically surfaced in the State due to geopolitical developments and cross-border population movements. Election authorities emphasized that vigilance during the revision exercise is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Officials participating in the review were instructed to strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and the requirements laid down under the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The objective, election authorities noted, is to ensure that every eligible citizen is able to exercise the right to vote while preventing wrongful inclusion of ineligible persons in the electoral rolls.

The Special Intensive Revision exercise involves door-to-door verification, scrutiny of supporting documents, correction of voter details and identification of duplicate or ineligible entries. Election officials were reminded that even minor lapses during the process could have long-term implications for electoral transparency and public confidence.

Discussions during the meeting also focused on strengthening coordination among field-level officials. Authorities highlighted the important role played by booth-level officers, who serve as the primary link between election administration and voters. Officials were encouraged to provide continuous support to these frontline personnel to ensure that verification work is carried out efficiently and accurately.

The review comes at a time when election authorities across several parts of the country are placing greater emphasis on the accuracy of voter databases. Electoral roll revisions have increasingly become a focus area as administrators seek to balance inclusive voter registration with safeguards against impersonation, duplication and fraudulent entries.

Participants at the meeting were also asked to remain proactive in addressing logistical and operational challenges that may arise during the verification process. Particular emphasis was placed on mobility, field inspections and regular monitoring of revision activities to ensure consistency in implementation.

Election authorities reiterated that the credibility of democratic institutions depends significantly on the reliability of voter rolls. Maintaining accurate electoral records, they noted, is essential not only for conducting elections but also for preserving public trust in the electoral system.

The ongoing revision exercise in Mizoram is expected to continue over the coming weeks, with officials carrying out extensive verification and data validation across districts. Election authorities believe that careful execution of the process will help strengthen electoral integrity and ensure that voter lists accurately reflect the State’s eligible electorate.

With the Election Commission placing special emphasis on vigilance, transparency and legal compliance, the electoral roll revision in Mizoram is likely to remain under close administrative scrutiny until the exercise is completed and the updated voter rolls are finalized.
