Lucknow: Lucknow Airport customs officials have seized approximately ₹13 crore worth of hydroponic cannabis from a passenger arriving from Muscat. The 13-kilogram consignment was cleverly concealed inside chocolate packets in the passenger’s checked baggage. The accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody after being produced before the court.

The seizure was made during a routine inspection of passengers arriving on an international flight from Muscat. Officials noticed suspicious items during baggage screening, prompting a detailed physical search. What initially appeared to be normal confectionery packs was later found to contain multiple hidden layers of narcotics.

Sophisticated Concealment Method Uncovered

ccording to officials, the contraband Awas packed inside five large chocolate boxes. Inside these boxes, customs officers discovered several plastic packets containing green-colored high-grade cannabis. The concealment method indicated a well-planned attempt to evade airport security checks.

Preliminary assessment suggests that the seized substance is hydroponic cannabis, a high-potency form of marijuana cultivated using advanced controlled farming techniques. Due to its purity and strength, it commands a high price in international illegal drug markets, making it a preferred commodity for transnational drug trafficking networks.

Authorities believe the consignment may be part of a larger international smuggling operation. Investigating agencies are now examining the passenger’s travel history, financial transactions, and possible communication records to identify other individuals involved in the network.

Customs officials stated that the contraband was carefully concealed to avoid detection during standard screening procedures. The use of food packaging such as chocolate boxes is a known tactic employed by traffickers to mislead security personnel and scanners.

Investigation Targets International Syndicate

The arrested passenger is currently being interrogated to determine whether he was acting as an independent courier or was part of an organized trafficking syndicate. Investigators are also trying to establish who received the consignment and its intended destination within India.

Officials noted that hydroponic cannabis has become increasingly prevalent in international drug trafficking cases due to its high market value and strong narcotic properties. Its rising demand has led to a surge in smuggling attempts through air routes in recent years.

The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Samples of the seized material have been sent for forensic analysis to confirm composition, purity level, and origin details.

Security Tightened and Surveillance Expanded

Following the seizure, airport security has been tightened further. Customs authorities have directed enhanced scrutiny of all international arrivals, especially baggage originating from high-risk routes. Passengers have also been advised not to carry or accept luggage from unknown individuals.

Officials emphasized that modern drug trafficking networks often operate across multiple countries, using unsuspecting travelers as carriers. In many cases, individuals are either lured through financial incentives or misled into transporting concealed narcotics without full awareness of the contents.

Security agencies are now focusing on tracing the financial and communication trail linked to the seized consignment. Digital surveillance and data analytics are being used to identify possible handlers and recipients associated with the shipment.

A senior narcotics enforcement expert noted that such cases reflect a growing trend of sophisticated concealment techniques used by international drug syndicates. Strengthening airport profiling systems and real-time intelligence sharing is becoming crucial to counter these evolving methods.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of strict airport vigilance and coordinated action between customs, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies. Officials stated that investigations are ongoing and more arrests cannot be ruled out as the network behind the smuggling attempt is being mapped.

Authorities reiterated that passenger awareness and cooperation remain key factors in preventing such illegal activities, as traffickers increasingly exploit commercial air routes for cross-border narcotics movement.
