The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched “ABHAY,” an AI-powered notice verification system designed to help citizens identify fake CBI notices and protect themselves from rising “digital arrest” scams. The new tool, available on the official CBI website, allows users to verify whether notices issued in the agency’s name are genuine or fraudulent.
AI-Based Verification System Aimed at Cyber Fraud Prevention
According to the CBI, ABHAY — short for “AI-Based Helpbot for Authentication of Your Notice” — is India’s first real-time notice verification system developed specifically to combat cyber-enabled fraud and impersonation scams. The agency said the platform was created as fraudsters increasingly use fake law enforcement notices, AI-generated content, and deepfake technology to intimidate victims.
Officials stated that users receiving notices in the name of the CBI can upload scanned copies of the documents on the platform after completing OTP verification. The AI-based system then checks the authenticity of the notice and flags it as either genuine or potentially fraudulent.

CBI Warns ‘Digital Arrest’ Has No Legal Basis
The agency reiterated that there is “no legal concept” of a digital arrest in Indian law. According to officials, scammers often impersonate law enforcement agencies and falsely accuse victims of crimes such as money laundering or cyber offences before placing them under fake “digital surveillance” to extort money.
Investigators warned that these fraud operations typically begin with forged notices designed to appear official and create panic among victims. Authorities said fraudsters frequently use fear, urgency, and fabricated legal threats to pressure people into transferring money or disclosing sensitive information.

The ABHAY system is available round-the-clock through the official CBI website and the dedicated verification portal ABHAY Verification Platform. Officials said the verification process has been designed to remain simple and accessible for ordinary users facing suspicious communications.
Reports indicated that the initiative was developed amid growing concerns over AI-powered scams, fake notices, and cyber fraud targeting citizens across the country.

Cybersecurity agencies have repeatedly warned that artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies are making impersonation scams more sophisticated and harder to detect. The launch of ABHAY reflects increasing efforts by investigative agencies to strengthen public awareness and deploy technology-based safeguards against cyber-enabled fraud.
The CBI also urged citizens not to panic if they receive suspicious notices or calls claiming involvement in criminal activity and advised users to report fraudulent communications through official cybercrime channels.
