A wave of cyberattacks attributed to Iranian-linked hackers has targeted organizations across Israel, with attackers breaching networks and deleting critical data, according to Israeli cyber authorities.

The Israel National Cyber Directorate said it has received multiple reports in recent days from organizations across different sectors that experienced attacks aimed at disrupting operations and damaging digital systems.

Officials warned that the attacks were designed to erase information and interfere with the functioning of organizations and the broader economy.

Stolen credentials used to infiltrate systems

According to cyber officials, most of the attacks occurred after hackers gained access to organizational networks using stolen user credentials obtained from earlier data breaches or leaks.

The attackers also exploited vulnerabilities in remote-access systems used by organizations to connect to their internal networks.

Once inside, the hackers proceeded to delete data and system files, causing disruption to the affected organizations’ operations.

Authorities issue cybersecurity warning

The Israel National Cyber Directorate warned that organizations of all sizes could be vulnerable to such cyberattacks.

Directorate head Yossi Karadi said the recent incidents demonstrate the growing threat posed by cyber warfare.

He stated that the attacks highlight how “organizations of all kinds, large and small, may be exposed to this type of attack.”

Cyber authorities have urged organizations to take immediate preventive steps to reduce the risk of further breaches.

These measures include:

  • Changing passwords for remote-access systems
  • Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA)
  • Checking that no unknown users have administrator privileges
  • Updating remote-access software to the latest security versions
  • Maintaining secure backups of critical data

Organizations that suspect a cyber incident have been advised to report it to the National Cyber Directorate’s 119 emergency response center.

Cyber defense efforts underway

Israeli cyber teams are working to contain the attacks and assist organizations that have already been affected.

Authorities said that no critical infrastructure essential to national functioning has been compromised so far, but monitoring and defensive efforts continue as investigations into the attacks progress.
