Sambhal: The SOG in-charge Mohit Chaudhary and his entire team have been suspended for allegedly detaining a scrap dealer illegally and extorting money from him. The action was taken by the SP after a circle officer’s inquiry found the allegations to be prima facie true. Apart from the in-charge, six other personnel have been placed under suspension, sending a strong message on accountability within the police department.

According to the complaint, the SOG team picked up a scrap dealer from the Ladam Sarai locality on February 2 along with e-waste. Instead of producing him at a police station or following due legal procedure, he was allegedly kept in custody for two days. The victim claimed he was released only after paying ₹30,000. He further alleged that the team demanded an additional ₹40,000 to return the seized e-waste.

Complaint triggered inquiry

Distressed by the alleged harassment, the scrap dealer approached the SP directly with a written complaint. Taking the matter seriously, the SP ordered an inquiry by the circle officer (CO). The CO recorded statements of the complainant, examined the conduct of the SOG personnel and submitted a report confirming the extortion charges.

Based on the findings, the SP immediately suspended the SOG in-charge and the entire team. The departmental order stated that their conduct was found to be in violation of established rules and they have been line-attached pending further inquiry.

Questions over custody procedures

The case has raised serious concerns about adherence to legal procedures during detention. As per norms, any person taken into custody must be formally recorded and produced before the appropriate authority within the stipulated time. The alleged two-day detention without due process and the extortion claims have put the spotlight on procedural lapses and misuse of power.

Detailed probe by ASP

A detailed investigation has now been assigned to the ASP (North), who will examine the role of each team member, determine who collected the money and verify whether similar incidents occurred earlier. Depending on the findings, departmental action may be followed by criminal proceedings against those found guilty.

Impact on police credibility

Senior officers acknowledged that such incidents damage the credibility of the police and erode public trust. A zero-tolerance approach has been adopted, and strict action, including possible dismissal from service, may be taken if the charges are proven.

Message of accountability

The swift suspension is being seen as a significant step toward enforcing discipline and transparency within the force. Officials reiterated that illegal detention, extortion or abuse of authority will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Observers say prompt inquiry and visible action help restore public confidence in law enforcement. For now, the suspended personnel remain line-attached, and further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The case has generated widespread discussion in the area, with residents awaiting the final findings.
