A case of digital honey trapping and extortion has emerged from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where a woman named Munni Ali befriended a jaggery trader on Instagram and extorted Rs 10 lakh by threatening to defame him. The arrest marks yet another breakthrough in a broader investigation into a honeytrap gang that has targeted several victims using similar tactics.

Online Friendship Turns into Extortion

The incident came to light when the victim, unable to deal with the mounting pressure and blackmail, confessed to his wife about the situation. Showing commendable courage, the wife approached the Bareilly police and filed an official complaint. The cybercrime unit acted swiftly and arrested Munni Ali, who during interrogation reportedly broke down and said, “I made a mistake, please forgive me, sir.”

Police Crackdown on Honeytrap Gang

This case is part of a wider crackdown on an organized honeytrap gang led by Madhuri Pal, who was earlier arrested along with her accomplices Sheetal alias Reena, Madhu Bharti, and Satyaveer. The gang operated by luring men through social media platforms, particularly Instagram, and then extorting large sums of money through blackmail and threats of defamation using doctored or obscene content.

More Victims Surface: Nawabganj Youth Drugged and Blackmailed

In a separate but related incident, a youth from Nawabganj filed a complaint at Baradari Police Station, stating that a woman named Sheetal invited him to a house in Sanjay Nagar. There, she allegedly spiked his drink, recorded an obscene video, and later robbed him of his gold jewellery and cash. The gang then demanded Rs 5 lakh from him under threat of making the video viral.

Munni’s Past and Gang Ties Exposed

Munni, a resident of Kila Cantonment, had been evading arrest for weeks. The police tracked her down in Delhi using electronic surveillance and informants. Upon her arrest, Munni confessed to having been lured into the racket by Reena and Satyaveer. She revealed that Madhuri Pal trained and led the gang, teaching members how to trap and manipulate victims.

This isn’t Munni’s first brush with the law. She had previously been jailed for a similar honeytrap case involving a youth from Pilibhit, along with Satyaveer. Despite that, she resumed criminal activities after her release, continuing the honeytrap scam until her recent arrest.

Gang’s Operations and Modus Operandi

The gang operated with precision — using attractive fake profiles to target men online, building trust through flirtatious chats, and then luring them into private meetings or video calls. Victims were either drugged, recorded in compromising situations, or emotionally manipulated. Once under control, the victims were extorted for large sums.

Police Advisory and Ongoing Investigation

With this arrest, the Bareilly police reiterated warnings to the public to remain cautious of unknown individuals on social media. Authorities are closely monitoring online activities and have stepped up surveillance on similar operations. Police officials stated, “This gang targeted innocent individuals through emotional manipulation and digital blackmail. We urge people not to engage with unknown social media profiles and report any suspicious behaviour immediately.”

The case remains under investigation, and further arrests are expected as law enforcement agencies continue to dismantle the network operating behind the scenes of these online scams.
