GHAZIABAD: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case of disproportionate assets against Deepak Chandra, a senior passport superintendent at the Regional Passport Office in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The action was taken following allegations that Chandra amassed wealth far beyond his known sources of income.
On Monday, CBI officials carried out searches at three locations linked to Chandra—two in Ghaziabad and one in Patna. These raids led to the recovery of approximately Rs 60 lakh in cash and crucial financial documents, including bank deposit details, property sale deeds, mutual fund investments, life insurance policies, and vehicle registration certificates.

According to the FIR, Chandra allegedly acquired these assets while serving in various roles—from assistant passport superintendent to senior passport superintendent—between July 30, 2018, and September 30, 2024. The investigation revealed that he possessed pecuniary resources worth Rs 85.06 lakh, which is a staggering 146.43% higher than his legitimate income. The official was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for this excess wealth, leading to the registration of a case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The CBI’s probe raises serious concerns over financial misconduct within government institutions. Officials suspect that the recovered wealth could be linked to illicit activities, and further investigations are underway to trace the sources of these assets.
This case highlights the ongoing crackdown on corruption in public offices, as law enforcement agencies tighten their grip on officials suspected of financial irregularities. The CBI is expected to summon Chandra for questioning and scrutinize his financial transactions in greater detail.
With the investigation still in progress, authorities are determined to unearth the full extent of the alleged corruption and take appropriate legal action.
