Highway Scandal: Senior NHAI Officer Caught Red-Handed in Rs. 10 Lakh Bribery Scam

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official and six others in connection with a bribery case linked to the Jhansi-Khajuraho Project in Madhya Pradesh.
The arrested NHAI official, identified as the General Manager & Project Director at NHAI’s Chhatarpur branch, was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs. 10 lakh from employees of a private company involved in the project.

CBI Unearths Alleged Conspiracy
According to the CBI, a case was registered on June 8, 2024, against a total of 10 accused. This includes the arrested NHAI official, six other individuals (including an NHAI Consultant, his Resident Engineer, and four employees of the private company), and the private company itself along with its two Directors.
The CBI alleges that the two Directors of the private company, in conspiracy with their employees, were involved in bribing NHAI officials to secure undue favors related to the Jhansi-Khajuraho Project. These favors allegedly included the final handover of the project, the issuance of a no-objection certificate (NOC), and the processing of the final bill.

CBI Lays Trap and Makes Arrests
The CBI laid a trap and successfully apprehended the NHAI General Manager while he was allegedly accepting the bribe of Rs. 10 lakh from the private company’s employees.
Searches Conducted and Investigation Ongoing
Searches were subsequently conducted at various locations across several cities, including Chhatarpur (M.P.), Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, and Gurugram. The CBI reports recovering incriminating documents and digital devices during these searches.
The arrested individuals will be produced before the court in Bhopal. The CBI investigation into the case is still ongoing.
