New Delhi: A total of 28 personnel from the Uttar Pradesh Police and Fire Service will receive the Medal for Gallantry (GM) on the occasion of Independence Day 2026 in recognition of their courage, dedication and acts of bravery in the line of duty. The Police-I Division’s PMA Cell of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, in an official letter issued on August 14, 2026, stated that the awards have received the President’s approval. The list comprises 12 Uttar Pradesh Police personnel and 16 Fire Service personnel. Seven personnel will receive the 1st Bar to the Gallantry Medal for subsequent acts of exceptional bravery, while one police inspector will be honoured posthumously.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the President has approved the conferment of Gallantry Medals on the 28 personnel on the occasion of Independence Day. The official communication has been sent to the Secretary to the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and the Secretary of the state Home Department. The awards will be announced through the Ministry of Home Affairs and the national awards portal. The President’s Secretariat will subsequently notify the awards in the Gazette of India.
12 Uttar Pradesh Police Personnel Selected
The Uttar Pradesh Police list comprises 12 officers and personnel serving in different ranks. They include Sub-Inspector Akshaya Parveer Tyagi, Head Constable Sunil Kumar, Inspector Late Sunil Kumar, Head Constable Deepak Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Singh, Head Constable Sanjay Singh, Head Constable Deepak Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police Muniraj G, IPS, Additional Superintendent of Police Satyajeet Gupta, IPS, Inspector Narendra Kumar, Head Constable Adesh Tripathi and Head Constable Prashant Kumar.
Among them, IPS officer Muniraj G and IPS officer Satyajeet Gupta will receive the Gallantry Medal for their acts of bravery. Sub-Inspector Akshaya Parveer Tyagi, Head Constable Sunil Kumar and Head Constable Deepak Kumar will receive the 1st Bar to the Gallantry Medal. Inspector Late Sunil Kumar will receive the Gallantry Medal posthumously.
The police list includes personnel ranging from the rank of Sub-Inspector to Additional Superintendent of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police. The selection of the two IPS officers is one of the notable features of this year’s Uttar Pradesh Police gallantry awards.
16 Fire Service Personnel Also Honoured
Sixteen personnel from the Uttar Pradesh Fire Service have also been selected for the Gallantry Medal. They include Chief Fire Officer Rahul Pal, Fire Station Second Officer Molchand Singh, Leading Fireman Netrapal Singh, Fire Service Driver Satendra Singh, Fire Service Driver Ram Pal Singh, Firemen Jogendra Singh, Vinay Yadav and Ayushman Kumar Sharma.
The other selected personnel are Fireman Deepak Kumar-I, Umakant Shukla, Fire Station Officer Sushil Kumar, Fire Station Second Officer Dharampal Singh, Fire Station Second Officer Sumit Pratap Singh, Firemen Pravesh Kumar, Vivek Kumar Patel and Pushpendra Singh.
Among the Fire Service personnel, Chief Fire Officer Rahul Pal, Fire Service Driver Satendra Singh, Fireman Jogendra Singh and Fireman Ayushman Kumar Sharma will receive the 1st Bar to the Gallantry Medal. The remaining personnel will receive the regular Gallantry Medal. Together, seven personnel from the Police and Fire Services will receive the 1st Bar.
What Does the 1st Bar to Gallantry Medal Mean?
The 1st Bar to the Gallantry Medal is awarded to a person who has previously received a Gallantry Medal and is subsequently recognised for another act of exceptional bravery. It is not a first-time gallantry award but an additional recognition for continued courageous service.
This year, three Uttar Pradesh Police personnel and four Fire Service personnel have been selected for the 1st Bar. The distinction recognises their repeated acts of courage and exceptional conduct while performing their official duties.
Posthumous Gallantry Medal for One Police Inspector
Inspector Late Sunil Kumar will receive the Gallantry Medal posthumously. Such a gallantry award recognises the service and sacrifice of personnel who demonstrated exceptional courage while performing their duties under challenging circumstances.
Awards to Be Notified in Gazette
The Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the awards have received the President’s approval and that formal communication has been sent to the concerned Uttar Pradesh authorities. The award announcements are being made available through the relevant government portals from August 14. The President’s Secretariat will subsequently publish the formal notification in the Gazette of India.
The Independence Day 2026 list is significant for Uttar Pradesh as it recognises personnel from both the Police and Fire Services through regular Gallantry Medals, 1st Bars and a posthumous award. The selection of IPS officers Muniraj G and Satyajeet Gupta is particularly noteworthy.
