A rapidly growing online fraud campaign across India is targeting users through fake OTT subscription offers that falsely claim to provide premium access to platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, JioHotstar, Zee5, and Sony LIV for just ₹299. Cybersecurity experts have clearly stated that these offers are completely fraudulent and are designed to steal money along with sensitive banking and personal data.
₹299 Deal Used as Digital Bait
According to reports, cybercriminals are creating fake groups and channels on WhatsApp and Telegram, promoting so-called “OTT combo packs” at extremely low prices. These offers claim to bundle multiple premium streaming services into a single subscription at rates far below market value, making them highly attractive to unsuspecting users.
Once a user shows interest, fraudsters directly engage with them and begin collecting personal details. Victims are often asked to share mobile numbers, email IDs, UPI details, and sometimes even banking credentials under the pretext of activating the subscription. After this, QR codes or payment links are shared, which appear legitimate but are actually designed to transfer money into fraudulent accounts.

WhatsApp and Telegram Become Scam Channels
Cyber experts explain that after payment, victims typically face three outcomes: either no subscription is activated, the scammers disappear completely, or the victim’s data is reused for future phishing attacks and fraud campaigns. In several cases, users are repeatedly pressured to pay additional charges such as “activation fee,” “security deposit,” or “verification charges,” leading to increasing financial losses.
The rising popularity of OTT platforms in India has significantly contributed to the success of such scams. With multiple subscriptions and increasing costs, many users are tempted by bundled offers that promise access to several platforms at a fraction of the actual price. Fraudsters exploit this demand by promoting fake lifetime plans, student discounts, and limited-time deals that are entirely fabricated but appear convincing.
Payment Links and QR Codes Hide the Trap
Authorities have made it clear that legitimate OTT services such as Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, Sony LIV, and Zee5 are only available through official apps and verified websites. Any third-party offer providing heavily discounted bundled access should be treated as suspicious and avoided immediately.
Cyber agencies have strongly advised users not to click on unknown links received through messaging apps or social media platforms. Sharing sensitive details such as OTPs, UPI PINs, or banking information can result in immediate and irreversible financial loss.
In case of suspected fraud, experts recommend immediate action, including contacting the bank to block transactions, disabling UPI access if necessary, and changing all related passwords. Victims are also advised to report such incidents on the national cybercrime portal cybercrime.gov.in for investigation and tracking.
Experts highlight that India’s rapidly expanding digital payment ecosystem has increased convenience but has also significantly raised exposure to cyber-enabled financial crimes. OTT subscription scams are now part of a broader pattern of digital fraud where criminals use attractive offers and psychological pressure to force users into making quick, unverified payments.
Experts Say Awareness Is the Strongest Defence
Cybersecurity researchers note that these scams often operate through organized and layered networks, making it difficult to identify the real beneficiaries. Funds are typically routed through multiple accounts and digital wallets within minutes, complicating recovery and investigation efforts.
The Future Crime Research Foundation has also warned that such scams are becoming more sophisticated, combining social engineering techniques, fake digital interfaces, and rapid financial routing systems. According to the foundation, cybercriminals are increasingly relying on psychological manipulation rather than technical hacking, making awareness the most important defense.
Renowned cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh has also issued a strong warning regarding such frauds. He stated that cybercriminals operate in a highly planned manner and use fake dashboards, fabricated profit displays, and attractive offers to build trust. According to him, “these criminals exploit human psychology and greed more than technology, which is why awareness remains the strongest safeguard against such frauds.”
Authorities and experts have reiterated that no genuine OTT platform offers multi-service premium access at such a low price as ₹299. Users are strongly advised to rely only on official platforms and avoid any third-party or suspicious subscription offers.
