OpenAI is preparing to bring ChatGPT’s advanced Work capabilities closer to its regular conversational interface, allowing users to move from asking questions to completing more complex tasks without switching between separate modes.

The company is also preparing to combine usage allowances across ChatGPT and its coding platform Codex. The changes could reshape how subscribers use the service, particularly those who rely on AI for research, document creation, software development and other demanding tasks.

The planned changes were outlined in an email sent to ChatGPT subscribers. The combined Chat and Work experience will initially be tested with a small group of users in the coming weeks before a wider rollout.

ChatGPT Could Move From Conversations To Completed Tasks

ChatGPT currently separates everyday conversations from longer, multi-step tasks through its Chat and Work experiences. The regular Chat interface is designed for questions, brainstorming and quick assistance, while Work can research information, analyse files and create finished documents, presentations, spreadsheets and reports.

The proposed combined experience is intended to reduce the need to move between these modes. Users would be able to begin with an ordinary conversation and then ask the system to carry out a more involved task within the same experience.

For example, a user could discuss an idea with ChatGPT, upload relevant files and ask it to prepare a presentation or build a website. The system could also use connected applications and interact with websites while the user reviews its progress and provides further instructions.

The change reflects a broader shift in the role of AI assistants. Instead of simply generating answers or suggesting what a person should do, these systems are increasingly being developed to carry out several steps and produce a finished result.

The initial test will be limited to selected users. OpenAI has not announced a general availability date for the combined experience.

Codex, which is primarily designed for software development, will continue to remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop application.

ChatGPT And Codex Will Share One Usage Allowance

The second change concerns how subscribers use their available AI allowance.

OpenAI plans to combine usage across ChatGPT and Codex, meaning activity in the two services will draw from a shared pool rather than being treated as entirely separate allowances.

The company’s Help Centre says the transition is expected to begin in December for Plus, Pro and Business plans. Usage will be measured in tokens, the units used to process and generate information.

The amount consumed will depend on the model selected and the complexity of the task. More advanced models and demanding assignments are expected to use more of the allowance than simpler interactions.

However, OpenAI has clarified that Instant chat will not count towards the shared usage limit. Subscribers will be able to check their remaining combined allowance and reset times under the Usage section in ChatGPT settings.

Users who exhaust their allowance will be able to wait for it to reset, upgrade their subscription or purchase credits for eligible features.

The change means that a user who spends considerable time on coding or complex Work assignments could have less of the shared allowance available for other tasks, depending on the plan and usage involved.

Pro Subscribers Have Already Received Higher Work Allowances

The planned integration follows a separate change to subscription limits announced on October 29.

OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex usage allowances for its Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans. It also reversed a previously announced reduction for Pro 200 subscribers, bringing those on the lower allowance up to the higher limit.

Business Premium subscribers were also included in the increase.

These changes are already effective and should not be confused with the forthcoming shared allowance across ChatGPT and Codex. The doubling increased the amount of Work and Codex usage included in eligible subscriptions, while the December transition will determine how usage across the services is counted.

OpenAI has not published exact numerical allowances for every subscription tier in the announcement. The actual consumption will also vary according to the model and the work being performed.

Why OpenAI Is Bringing Its AI Tools Closer Together

The move is part of a wider effort to make ChatGPT a platform where users can complete work rather than simply obtain information.

Work is designed for tasks that involve several stages, such as researching a subject, analysing documents, preparing a report and revising the final output. Codex focuses more specifically on writing and debugging code, running tests and working with software projects.

Bringing more of these capabilities into the main Chat experience could make advanced AI tools easier to use for people who do not regularly work with specialised coding or productivity software.

It could also increase the amount of work users complete within ChatGPT. A person may begin with a simple question and continue into research, document preparation or website-related tasks without moving to another application.

The shared allowance introduces a corresponding change in how subscribers manage their usage. As AI systems take on longer and more complex assignments, the resources required to complete those tasks become an increasingly important part of subscription planning.

What This Means For Users

For subscribers, the integration could make ChatGPT more convenient by reducing the separation between everyday conversations and tasks that require several steps. Users may be able to move from an idea to a finished document or other deliverable in one continuous workflow.

However, the shared usage allowance will make it important to understand how different activities consume resources. A complex research assignment or coding task may use more of the available allowance than an ordinary Instant conversation.

The December change will therefore be relevant not only to Pro subscribers but also to Plus and Business users. The eventual experience will depend on the rollout, plan-specific allowances and how frequently subscribers use ChatGPT for demanding tasks.
