A suspected financial fraud involving more than ₹1.37 crore has come to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, allegedly targeting a veterinary officer. Ghughli Police have registered a case against 13 named accused, including the complainant’s relative Garima Singh, and other unidentified persons on charges of fraud, forgery and criminal conspiracy. The complainant, Dr Dilip Singh, who is posted as the officer in charge of the Bargadwa Veterinary Hospital, alleged that his personal and banking documents were obtained on the pretext of helping him close an existing car loan. The documents were allegedly misused to secure personal loans totalling ₹1,37,42,124 from six financial institutions.
According to the complaint, Dr Singh, a resident of Harkhi village in the Ghughli area, already had a car loan. In November 2025, his relative Garima Singh allegedly assured him that she would help close the existing loan. On this pretext, she allegedly obtained his PAN card, Aadhaar card and bank account details through WhatsApp.
Loans Sanctioned from Six Institutions
Police said the accused allegedly used the personal and financial information to obtain multiple personal loans without the veterinary officer’s knowledge. The sanctioned amounts were subsequently transferred to different bank accounts, according to the complaint.
The alleged loan amounts include ₹19.41 lakh from Cholamandalam, ₹23.64 lakh from Bandhan Bank, ₹24.51 lakh from Yes Bank, ₹19.89 lakh from ICICI Bank, ₹27.02 lakh from Axis Bank and ₹22.92 lakh from HDFC Bank. Together, the loans amounted to ₹1,37,42,124.
Investigators are examining how the loan applications were processed, what documents were submitted and whether any person assisted in the alleged fraudulent approvals.
Fraud Came to Light When EMI Payments Stopped
According to Dr Singh, the accused allegedly paid the loan instalments for some time before stopping the payments. The fraud came to light when he began receiving information that around ₹2.95 lakh was being deducted from his bank account every month towards loan repayments.
The complainant reportedly earns around ₹1.25 lakh a month. After receiving information about the unusually high deductions, he began checking the transactions and discovered that several personal loans had allegedly been taken in his name.
When he confronted the accused and demanded an explanation, he allegedly received threats to his life, according to the complaint.
Relative and Financial Institution Personnel Under Probe
Ghughli Police have named Garima Singh, Dhuw Narayan Singh, Vishal Yadav, Sadhna Mall, Mohan Singh, Dinkar Mani Tripathi and Bhanu Pratap Singh among the accused. The complaint also seeks investigation into the alleged role of officials and employees associated with the six financial institutions involved in the loan approvals.
Investigators are now examining the bank transactions to determine where the loan proceeds were transferred and who ultimately benefited from the funds. The police are also verifying the documents used during the loan application process and the digital trail associated with the alleged transactions.
Possible Link to Earlier Cases
The case has emerged amid a wider investigation into alleged financial fraud in Maharajganj. Police have registered several FIRs in connection with the suspected network. The complaint also refers to the death of Dr Paramatma Singh, a veterinary officer formerly posted in the Nautanwa area, who died by suicide in Gorakhpur on August 13 after allegedly facing harassment linked to the same network.
Police are examining bank records, digital evidence, loan documents and the communication between the accused and the complainant. Investigators are also trying to establish whether the accused acted independently or as part of a larger organised financial fraud network.
The police investigation will determine how the loans were obtained, where the ₹1.37 crore was ultimately transferred and whether personnel associated with the financial institutions played any role in the alleged fraud.
