Gorakhpur: A woman and her alleged associates are accused of defrauding officers, doctors and government employees of around ₹12 crore in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, while allegedly pursuing a shortcut to becoming a billionaire. Police investigations have so far led to nine FIRs in Gorakhpur and Maharajganj. According to the investigation, a significant portion of the allegedly defrauded money was spent on futures and options trading, commissions for arranging loans and maintaining victims’ trust. Police have found that around ₹4 crore was allegedly invested in trading and subsequently lost, while approximately ₹10 crore is believed to have been spent overall.
Police arrested Sahjanwan railway station superintendent and his daughter Garima Singh on August 3 in connection with the alleged fraud. Following their arrest, additional complaints emerged in Gorakhpur and Maharajganj. Investigators are now examining the alleged network’s other members, bank accounts, loan documents and financial transactions.
Trust Built Through Loan Promises
According to the police investigation, the alleged group targeted people who either needed new loans or were struggling to repay existing loans. Garima Singh allegedly assured victims that she would arrange bank loans and personally take responsibility for the subsequent instalments.
After loans were approved, a substantial portion of the money was allegedly transferred into accounts controlled by the accused. Investigators allege that initial instalments were paid to establish credibility. Once the victims began trusting her, communication was gradually reduced and the alleged payments stopped.
In another alleged method, victims with existing loans were promised that their outstanding debt could be cleared. They were allegedly persuaded to take fresh personal loans and transfer the proceeds to accounts linked to the accused.
₹4 Crore Allegedly Put Into F&O Trading
Investigators have found that money allegedly obtained through the fraud was used in futures and options trading in an attempt to generate quick profits. According to police, around ₹4 crore was invested in such trading, but the amount was allegedly lost.
Another approximately ₹4 crore was allegedly spent as commissions for arranging loans quickly. Investigators also allege that around ₹2 crore was used to pay instalments for victims whose loans had been obtained, apparently to maintain their confidence. Together, these expenses account for approximately ₹10 crore of the alleged proceeds.
₹1.37 Crore Loan Allegedly Taken in Doctor’s Name
In a case registered at Ghughli police station in Maharajganj, a government veterinary officer alleged that Garima Singh gained his trust by citing their distant family relationship. According to the complaint, she promised to settle his existing car loan and allegedly arranged a loan of ₹1.37 crore in his name.
The case also includes allegations against officials and employees associated with six banks. Police are investigating whether lending procedures were followed properly and whether any irregularities allegedly occurred during the loan approval process.
Railway Employees Also Allegedly Targeted
In another case, a station superintendent alleged that loans totalling ₹1.67 crore were obtained in his name from multiple banks. According to the complaint, he was assured that the accused would repay the instalments. Around ₹10 lakh was initially transferred to his account and allegedly described as his benefit.
Police are now linking similar complaints to determine how many government employees, officers and doctors may have been targeted by the alleged network.
Diary Allegedly Mentioned Billionaire Goal
During the investigation, police reportedly recovered a diary allegedly belonging to Garima Singh. It contained references to a target of becoming a billionaire by April-May 2026. The diary also reportedly mentioned a goal of earning ₹100 crore.
Investigators are examining these entries alongside alleged financial transactions and the suspected fraud pattern. However, the diary entries alone cannot establish criminal liability and will need to be corroborated through other evidence.
Doctor’s Death Adds Serious Dimension
A serious development emerged on August 13 when a 45-year-old doctor, who was allegedly a victim of the fraud, died. Police reportedly recovered a suicide note in which he blamed Garima Singh and her alleged associates for his death.
According to police, the doctor had allegedly been defrauded of around ₹1.40 crore and was under severe financial and emotional pressure. Investigators are examining the circumstances of his death and the alleged connection between the financial fraud and the incident.
Nine FIRs, More Complaints Under Investigation
Nine FIRs have so far been registered in Gorakhpur and Maharajganj, while several additional complaints are reportedly being examined. Police expect the number of complaints and the alleged amount involved to increase if further victims come forward.
Investigators are examining bank accounts, mobile phones, loan applications, financial documents and digital transactions. They are also trying to establish the role of people allegedly connected to Garima Singh and her father.
Gangster Act Action Being Considered
Police are investigating the role of other alleged members of the network and are preparing to initiate proceedings under the Gangsters Act. Investigators are also seeking custodial questioning to trace the movement of loan proceeds, identify beneficiary accounts and uncover the alleged financial network.
The investigation is currently focused on tracing the ₹12 crore allegedly obtained through the fraud, identifying how many people were allegedly induced to take loans and determining whether anyone else was involved in facilitating the alleged scheme.
