NEW DELHI — Jio Platforms, led by Mukesh Ambani, has established new primary market benchmarks in India after its initial public offering attracted bids exceeding ₹4.5 lakh crore and received more than 1.25 crore applications. The approximately ₹30,213-crore public issue, which concluded subscription on October 23, became India’s largest initial share sale and set twelve separate records, including the highest application count logged by any public offering globally. Data compiled by market participants reflected broad-based participation, spanning qualified institutional buyers, small and large high-net-worth individuals, retail investors, company employees, and existing shareholders of Reliance Industries. The heavy bidding emerged despite broader volatility in financial markets, persistent selling by foreign institutional investors, and declines across the benchmark Nifty 50 index.
Unprecedented Subscription Inflows and Global Application Record
The public issue opened for bidding on October 21 and gained immediate traction, drawing over ₹67,117 crore on its first day to cross three times the offer size. By the close of bidding, overall subscription surpassed 20 times the available equity. The receipt of more than 1.25 crore total applications marked the first instance worldwide of an initial public offering crossing the one-crore application threshold, surpassing the previous global record of roughly 97.33 lakh applications. Individual retail investors generated over one crore applications, setting a domestic record for participation by small applicants. Prior to the public bidding, the company allotted equity shares valued at ₹8,110 crore to 212 anchor investor accounts and schemes, with anchor demand reportedly surpassing ₹2.5 lakh crore.
Institutional participation also set a historical high, with qualified institutional buyers tendering bids worth approximately ₹3.87 lakh crore, moving past the prior benchmark of roughly ₹3.86 lakh crore. Non-institutional segments similarly registered peak volumes, as small high-net-worth individuals submitted over 5.75 lakh applications and large high-net-worth investors generated more than 3.5 lakh applications. The reservation portion for Reliance Industries shareholders drew over 21 lakh applications and bids exceeding ₹18,800 crore, doubling the earlier category record of approximately ₹9,350 crore. The employee reservation portion gathered over two lakh applications, demonstrating extensive internal participation alongside external investment.
Valuation Targets and Global Corporate Comparisons
Calculated at the upper end of the issue price, the estimated market capitalisation of Jio Platforms stands at approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore. Following its formal stock market debut, the entity could rank among India’s three most valuable listed companies by market capitalization. The valuation is also expected to place the company among an international tier of founder-led businesses valued at more than $100 billion at the time of their public debuts, comparable to public offerings staged by Meta, Alibaba, and SpaceX.
The public offering represents a major capital markets expansion following the company’s 2020 fundraising round, during which it secured approximately $20 billion from thirteen strategic and private equity investors. Market analysts also noted potential implications for domestic currency conditions, as significant foreign institutional bidding requires converting US dollars into Indian rupees, which can augment dollar liquidity and support the local currency. However, exchange rate movements remain contingent on broader economic fundamentals, including international crude oil prices, general capital flows, and the global trajectory of the US dollar.
Share Allotment and Stock Exchange Listing Timeline
The basis of share allotment is scheduled to be finalized on October 26, after which successful bidders will receive allocations against their subscription mandates. Official trading in the company’s equity shares is tentatively set to commence on the BSE and the National Stock Exchange on October 28. Final allocations and initial market pricing will become evident once the listing process concludes on both exchanges.
