Police in Guwahati have apprehended a man on VIP Road for allegedly using a vehicle with a forged registration number, in a case that investigators say is linked to an earlier theft complaint involving the same car.
Vehicle Stopped on VIP Road
The accused has been identified as Pinku Mudoi, a resident of Morakolong under Dharamtul police station in Morigaon district. He was intercepted while in possession of a Kia vehicle displaying the registration number AS01GF0949.
Police verification, the screenshots say, revealed that the vehicle’s actual registration number was AS01SC7105. The discrepancy led investigators to suspect that the car was being used with a fake number plate.

Link to Earlier Theft Complaint
The report further states that investigators found Mudoi had earlier lodged a complaint at Basistha Police Station claiming that the same vehicle had been stolen. That complaint had been registered as Basistha Police Station Case No. 53/26 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The reports do not specify the exact sequence by which the alleged fake registration came to light, but they indicate that police are treating the matter as a suspected fraud tied to the earlier theft report.
Police Probe Suspected Fraud Angle
The case has now shifted from a simple vehicle check to a broader suspected fraud inquiry. Police say the forged registration number and the previous theft complaint appear to be connected, raising questions over the circumstances in which the complaint was filed and the vehicle was later found in use.
Currently there are no further details on charges beyond the reference to relevant BNS provisions in the earlier complaint, but the apprehension on VIP Road has opened a fresh line of investigation into the use of false vehicle registration and the possibility of deception linked to the reported theft.
