New Delhi: Fortis Hospital in Shalimar Bagh has come under the Delhi government’s scrutiny after a district-level inquiry reportedly found multiple alleged lapses in patient care, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance. The action follows allegations that a young man with multiple stab injuries was not provided timely medical treatment, with the complainant claiming that payment was sought before treatment began. The Delhi government has said it will initiate action against the hospital based on the inquiry’s findings.

Complaint Triggered Inquiry

According to an official statement, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered the inquiry after the complaint was raised during a public grievance hearing. The complainant alleged that the delay in providing emergency medical care contributed to the youth’s death. A joint inspection team led by the Central District Magistrate, along with officials from the Health Department, the Municipal Corporation, the Delhi Fire Service and other departments, visited the hospital to examine the allegations.

During the inspection, the team reviewed CCTV footage and records from the hospital’s emergency department. According to the Delhi government, the footage indicated that the injured youth had walked into the emergency department on his own, suggesting that prompt medical intervention could have been possible. Investigators also examined the hospital’s emergency response procedures and related documentation as part of the inquiry.

Multiple Irregularities Reported

The inspection reportedly identified several alleged irregularities beyond patient care. According to the government, these included suspected violations of building by-laws, deficiencies in the fire safety system, unauthorised construction, alleged misuse of the basement area, and shortcomings in adherence to standard operating procedures governing medical protocols. Based on these findings, the Delhi government said it is preparing a detailed inquiry report and has decided to initiate appropriate action against the hospital.

Fortis Hospital, in its response, said it would fully cooperate with the authorities. The hospital stated that it would review the findings once they are formally shared and reiterated that patient safety and well-being remain its highest priority. It added that it is committed to cooperating throughout the investigation process.

Emergency Care Under Focus

The case has drawn attention to the responsibilities of healthcare institutions in handling medical emergencies and complying with regulatory standards. Under Indian law, hospitals are generally expected to provide stabilising emergency treatment without unnecessary delay, particularly in life-threatening situations. Authorities are expected to examine whether established emergency care protocols were followed in this instance.

Final Report Awaited

The inquiry is continuing, and the final report is expected to determine whether further regulatory or legal action will be recommended. The Delhi government has indicated that all aspects of the alleged irregularities, including patient care procedures and infrastructure compliance, will be examined before a final decision is taken. Meanwhile, the hospital’s operations remain under scrutiny as authorities proceed with the investigation.
