Police have arrested another key accused in an alleged interstate racket that secured MBBS admissions using forged freedom fighter certificates, marking a significant development in a case that has been under investigation since September 2025. The latest arrest takes the total number of accused apprehended in the case to six, while investigators continue to probe the broader network involved in preparing fake documents and facilitating admissions.

The arrested accused has been identified as Suresh Chandra, a resident of Varanasi, who was taken into custody from his residence in Jhansi. According to investigators, his name surfaced during the course of the ongoing investigation into the alleged conspiracy involving forged certificates used to obtain MBBS admissions under the freedom fighter quota.

Police said the case originated after the Directorate General of Medical Education and Training, Uttar Pradesh, sought police verification on August 27, 2025, of certificates submitted by nine students who had obtained MBBS admissions during the 2012–13 academic session under the freedom fighter quota. Authorities suspected irregularities in the submitted documents, prompting a detailed verification exercise.

During the investigation, officials concluded that the certificates submitted by all nine students were allegedly forged. Based on a complaint filed by a clerk at the department headquarters, an FIR was registered on September 20, 2025, against the nine students and several members of the alleged admission racket. Police subsequently launched a comprehensive investigation to identify the individuals responsible for arranging the forged certificates and facilitating the admissions.

Investigators earlier arrested the alleged kingpin of the racket, Shubham Singh, a resident of Mirzapur, in November 2025. During his interrogation, the name of another alleged associate, Sanjay Dubey, also from Mirzapur, emerged, leading to his arrest. Further investigation revealed the alleged involvement of Suresh Chandra, who was subsequently traced to Jhansi and arrested by a joint team of the Special Operations Group (SWAT) and local police.

According to investigators, the alleged racket is suspected of charging substantial sums of money from candidates in exchange for arranging forged freedom fighter certificates and facilitating admissions under the reserved quota. Police are examining financial transactions, communication records and document trails to determine the extent of the conspiracy and identify other beneficiaries or facilitators who may have been involved.

Officials said forensic examination of the seized documents and digital evidence is continuing. Investigators are also verifying whether similar forged certificates were used in other admissions or educational institutions. The probe aims to establish how the forged documents were prepared, who authenticated or supplied them, and whether additional government records were manipulated during the admission process.

Police stated that further arrests cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses. Authorities are working to identify every individual connected with the alleged interstate network, including document forgers, intermediaries and beneficiaries. Legal proceedings against the arrested accused are underway, while investigators continue to gather evidence to strengthen the prosecution and expose the full extent of the alleged admission fraud.
