Fake “Desi” Egg Factory Exposed In Moradabad — 4.5 Lakh Artificially-Coloured Eggs Seized

In a major food-fraud bust, the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety Department (UPFSD) raided a warehouse near Rampur-Dohraha Barwara Majhra in Moradabad and seized approximately 4.53 lakh artificially-coloured eggs. The ordinary white eggs had been painted with a concoction of natural and chemical dyes to mimic the appearance of premium “desi” eggs and were likely destined for sale at considerably inflated prices.

According to officials, the colouring process involved substances like tannin (commonly known as “kattha”) tea-dust residue, and vermilion (sindoor). The misuse was uncovered after surveillance of the warehouse, during the predawn raid, authorities found stacks of dyed eggs, hundreds of white eggs awaiting colouring, and jars containing colouring agents. The entire facility was promptly sealed.

Authorities estimate the value of the seized consignment at around ₹3.89 lakh. Alongside the coloured eggs, over 35,000 uncoloured white eggs kept ready for dyeing were confiscated. All materials used in the adulteration, including the dyes and colouring equipment — were also seized. A case has been registered against the warehouse owner under applicable laws, and investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and outlets where these “fake desi eggs” were being distributed.

Food-safety officials have cautioned the public that such adulterated eggs pose serious health risks: consumption may cause allergies, gastrointestinal problems or other complications due to chemical contamination. They warned consumers to remain vigilant, especially during winters when egg consumption typically rises, and report any suspicious or unbranded eggs.

This case raises larger questions about food-fraud, regulatory oversight, and consumer safety. With “desi eggs” often commanding nearly double the price of regular white eggs, unscrupulous traders may be tempted to exploit the price differential by passing off chemically-treated white eggs as nutritious and traditional local eggs. The crackdown demonstrates the need for stricter surveillance, frequent inspection of supply chains, and public awareness about adulteration — particularly in essential consumables.
