A 72-year-old resident of Thrippunithura in Ernakulam district was defrauded of 7.70 lakh rupees after cybercriminals posing as Election Commission officials lured him into accessing a fraudulent link under the pretext of updating electoral rolls. The complainant approached the Hill Palace police station after discovering unauthorized withdrawals from two separate bank accounts immediately following his interaction with the malicious web link. Police have taken up the complaint for examination, initiating a technical review of the communication logs and downstream financial accounts used in siphoning the money.
Fraudsters Cite Discrepancies Under Special Intensive Revision
The fraudulent operation began when the elderly complainant received unsolicited messages asserting that discrepancies existed within his official voter registration details. The message claimed that his recorded name failed to correspond accurately with his father’s name as documented in the electoral roll. The perpetrators insisted that rectifying the mismatch was mandatory under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise. To reinforce credibility, the callers contacted him directly by telephone, presenting themselves as authorized representatives of the Election Commission tasked with rectifying public registry records.
Malicious Messaging Link Enables Dual Bank Account Siphoning
Following the telephone discussions, the accused transmitted a web link through the instant messaging application WhatsApp, masquerading it as an authentic Election Commission verification portal. The victim was directed to open the address to rectify the alleged clerical errors and update his credentials. Upon clicking the forwarded link, unauthorized fund transfers were initiated across two of his operational bank accounts, resulting in an aggregate financial loss of 7.70 lakh rupees. Realizing that the administrative outreach was a calculated deceit, the resident immediately filed a formal complaint with the local territorial police.
Authorities Track Cyber Trail as Citizens Advised Caution
Police investigators are tracing the digital footprint associated with the deceptive link, including the mobile contact numbers utilized during the voice calls and the ultimate recipient accounts handling the transferred funds. The case underscores a growing pattern wherein cyber fraudsters exploit routine administrative procedures to fabricate urgency and breach digital security safeguards. Law enforcement officials noted that administrative bodies do not solicit modifications or distribute update links through instant messaging platforms, emphasizing that account holders should verify official communications through standard public offices rather than interacting with unverified online links.
