Court Orders FIR Over Alleged Hateful Social Media Posts on Ex-IPS Officer’s Plea
A Lucknow court has directed the registration of an FIR based on a plea by former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur. The plea alleges that numerous social media posts were designed to incite religious disharmony and threaten national unity, prompting the court to order a thorough investigation.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Lucknow has instructed the Gomtinagar Police Station to register an FIR regarding alleged hateful social media posts. The directive comes in response to an application filed by former IPS officer and Azad Adhikar Sena National President, Amitabh Thakur, under Section 173(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
Thakur, in his plea, highlighted the presence of at least 80 social media posts from accounts on X (formerly Twitter). He alleged that the content was designed to foster religious disharmony, insult the religious sentiments of certain communities, and jeopardize national unity. Additionally, Thakur claimed that most of these posts originated from specific accounts, deliberately targeting societal harmony under the guise of religion.
According to the application, despite reporting the matter to the concerned police authorities earlier, no action was taken, prompting Thakur to approach the court. The Special CJM, Lucknow, Kuvar Mitresh Singh Kushwaha, reviewed the submissions and determined that a cognizable offense appeared to have been committed. The court concluded that an investigation was warranted to verify the allegations and ensure accountability.
In its directive, the court noted the importance of maintaining communal harmony and deemed it necessary to probe the intentions and consequences of the alleged posts. The Gomtinagar Police Station has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation under relevant sections and reporting the findings to the court.
