Sultanpur: A local court on Friday sent former Amethi Nagar Panchayat chairperson Chandrama Devi to judicial custody in a fraud case. The court scheduled the hearing of her regular bail application for March 30.

Officials said that after her remand, Chandrama Devi was admitted to the district hospital for medical observation. Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. R.K. Mishra confirmed that she is under medical supervision.

Earlier, her interim bail plea had been rejected. Advocate Arvind Singh Raja argued that Chandrama Devi’s health is critical and requested proper medical treatment. Meanwhile, the complainant’s counsel Azizurrahman and District Government Counsel Ram Achal Mishra opposed the bail application.

Chandrama Devi, wife of district panchayat president Rajesh Agrahari, surrendered on Thursday at the ACJM office in compliance with High Court directives. Her bail petition was earlier rejected there, after which the matter was moved to the District Judge’s court.

The case stems from a complaint filed by local Amethi trade leader Ghanshyam Soni. He alleged that during her tenure as chairperson, Chandrama Devi fraudulently facilitated the transfer of his house in the names of Lallu Prasad Soni, Lalji Soni, Pujari Lal Soni, and Sangam Lal Soni.

The complainant claimed that a forged certificate was issued to enable the property transfer. The court had summoned all the accused for trial on February 8, 2024.

The defense, however, argued that such certificates are issued by the executive officer of the Nagar Panchayat, not the chairperson. They claimed that Chandrama Devi has been falsely implicated due to political rivalry.

Chandrama Devi’s remand and hospitalisation have added gravity to the case. Officials stated that both the court and administration are ensuring a balance between her health and the legal process.

Experts noted that cases like these raise questions not only about transparency in local administration and political systems but also about citizen trust and protection of property rights.

During the investigation, the court ordered verification of all relevant documents and signatures. In the upcoming hearings, the court will determine whether the allegations are substantiated and will take further legal action as necessary.
