AZAMGARH: In a significant breakthrough against cybercrime, authorities in Azamgarh have arrested a man allegedly involved in a cyber fraud case worth more than ₹7 lakh. Investigators say the case has exposed a well-organized cybercrime network in which different members performed specific roles, from arranging fraudulent banking channels to converting stolen money into cash.

The case originated after a resident of the Didarganj area reported that cyber fraudsters had siphoned money from his bank account. The victim subsequently lodged a complaint through the National Cyber Helpline, following which a formal case was registered and an investigation was launched.

During the probe, investigators analyzed digital evidence, banking transactions, and technical records to trace the flow of funds. The investigation eventually led to the identification of Jitendra Prasad Yadav, a resident of Kushinagar district. Acting on the evidence collected, a police team tracked him down and arrested him from East Champaran district in Bihar.

Evidence Seizure and Network Hierarchy

Officials recovered a mobile phone, Aadhaar card, PAN card, and a Maruti car from the accused during the operation. During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted his involvement in the cyber fraud network. Investigators believe the information obtained from him could help uncover other members of the syndicate and reveal the full extent of its operations.

Preliminary interrogation suggested that the network functioned through a structured hierarchy. One member was responsible for arranging fake or rented bank accounts, while another handled the transfer of fraud proceeds across multiple accounts. The money was then routed through several layers of transactions to conceal its origin and make tracking more difficult.

Cash Conversion Tactics

According to investigators, Yadav’s primary role was to convert the fraudulently obtained money into cash. To achieve this, he allegedly used petrol pumps and public service centers as channels for withdrawing and dispersing funds. By breaking transactions into smaller amounts and routing them through different points, the syndicate attempted to obscure the financial trail and evade scrutiny.

Cybercrime experts note that modern fraud networks have evolved beyond simply deceiving victims online. Many groups now employ sophisticated money-routing and laundering techniques to disguise illicit proceeds. As a result, investigations increasingly rely on detailed analysis of banking trails, digital footprints, and financial transaction networks.

Renowned cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh said cybercriminals today often combine social engineering tactics with organized financial networks to hide the proceeds of crime. He advised citizens to remain cautious about unsolicited calls, suspicious links, KYC update requests, investment offers, and banking-related messages. He also urged victims to report suspicious activity immediately through official cybercrime reporting channels.

Investigators are currently pursuing leads provided by the arrested accused and are working to identify other members of the network. Officials suspect that the syndicate may have connections across multiple states and could be linked to a broader cybercrime ecosystem.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities believe further arrests are likely in the coming days as they continue to dismantle the network and trace the movement of funds generated through cyber fraud.
