The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has launched a technical inquiry into social media giant Meta following the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official Facebook video. Meta issued a formal apology to the Government of India, attributing the disruption to an automated technical glitch rather than a policy violation. Although Meta restored the video shortly after detecting the error, central government officials classified the removal of content from a high-profile, verified national account as an unacceptable breach, demanding a comprehensive technical explanation to determine how the address was taken down.
Technical Glitch Explanation Deemed Insufficient by Union Ministry
The video, originally uploaded on July 23, featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing students and young citizens regarding stringent legal measures to curb examination paper leaks. While the video received widespread viewership across Instagram within twenty-four hours, its availability on Facebook was unexpectedly interrupted, making the post temporarily unavailable to users across India. Meta acknowledged the disruption soon after, stating through an official spokesperson that the content was incorrectly taken down in error and reinstated immediately upon detection. The company expressed regret over the incident and reiterated that its content moderation policies were not triggered intentionally.
Despite Meta’s public apology, Union Ministry officials signaled that a generic technical explanation falls short of addressing underlying systemic vulnerabilities. S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, stated that the removal of verified content belonging to prominent national leaders represents an extremely disturbing occurrence. Officials indicated that senior Meta representatives may be summoned to provide log analysis, system diagnostic data, and an explicit account of how automated moderation algorithms failed. The government intends to seek firm commitments that verified public handles will be digitally ringfenced against automated moderation errors.
Platform Accountability and Automated Content Moderation Concerns
The controversy has renewed broader debates surrounding the reliability and transparency of automated content moderation systems deployed by global tech platforms. Major social media networks rely heavily on a combination of artificial intelligence algorithms and human review streams to flag policy violations. When automated flags misinterpret context or misclassify legitimate public communications, the resulting censorship can disrupt official governmental outreach and erode public trust in digital information channels.
Digital governance and cybersecurity experts emphasize that simple content restoration is insufficient when dealing with high-priority public communication channels. Experts argue that tech platforms must implement stringent human verification safeguards before automated systems can execute moderation actions on verified institutional accounts. Furthermore, independent technical audits and enhanced internal monitoring systems are necessary to prevent algorithmic glitches from overriding official announcements. As the central government’s investigation proceeds, the findings are expected to establish stricter compliance expectations for foreign tech companies operating within India.
