How Could Foreign Investment Support Infrastructure?

During discussions with HPS Investment Partners CEO Scott Kapnick, Sitharaman examined private credit, structured finance and long-term business financing.

She encouraged the firm to consider establishing a fund at GIFT International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) and collaborating with the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF). HPS highlighted the potential for debt financing to complement equity investments in major infrastructure projects.

Separately, MUFG Asia Pacific Chief Executive Yukinobu Saeki discussed expanding the bank’s Indian operations, particularly in capital markets, infrastructure, renewable energy and mergers and acquisitions financing.

Sitharaman also encouraged cooperation with the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID).

Which Sectors Attracted European and Japanese Interest?

In discussions with SEB Chairperson Marcus Wallenberg, the minister reviewed India’s economic outlook and opportunities for European institutional investment. SEB identified energy, data centres, information technology, healthcare, financial services and housing finance as potential investment areas. The discussions also covered sustainable financing, private equity investments in non-banking financial companies, green transition initiatives and skill development.

During her meeting with SMBC executive Rajeev Kannan, Sitharaman discussed affordable housing, trade finance, NBFC financing and other priority sectors. She encouraged SMBC to explore opportunities through NIIF and GIFT IFSC, including aircraft leasing.

What Role Could Artificial Intelligence Play?

Sitharaman’s meeting with B Capital Group co-founder and CEO Raj Ganguly focused on sovereign artificial intelligence and India’s wider AI ecosystem. She highlighted India’s potential to become a major provider of AI services and encouraged investment in applications for banking and financial services.

B Capital emphasised the importance of currency stability and predictable, transparent taxation for investors.

Across the meetings, discussions also addressed regulatory transparency, domestic business financing and investment opportunities in technology and energy. The engagements reflected efforts to strengthen international financial participation in India’s infrastructure and emerging technology sectors.
