Ahmedabad Police have arrested a Delhi based religious preacher for allegedly using artificial intelligence to create fake social media profiles and morphed content in the name of a Gujarat based woman, in a case that has been brought under the city police’s Mission Cyber Rakshika initiative focused on online safety for women.
Mission Cyber Rakshika and the Complaint
The case was disclosed as part of Mission Cyber Rakshika, an initiative launched to ensure online safety for women and raise awareness on how individuals can protect their social media presence and personal safety. Deputy Commissioner of Police Lavina Sinha said the mission was launched on May 1 with the objective of identifying such offenders and creating a safer digital space for women across social media and other online platforms.
According to Sinha, police had already registered several FIRs under the initiative. In one such case, the victim alleged that between December 2025 and April 2026, multiple accounts were created in her name and operated using morphed photos and videos based on her identity. The complaint said the woman found that several fake accounts had appeared in her name and that manipulated visual material had been uploaded using her profile.
Police said the investigation was taken up under the broader effort to address online harassment and impersonation targeting women through social media platforms.

Accused Identified After Probe
During the investigation, police identified the accused as 27 year old Sumit Nemchand Sharma, a resident of New Delhi. According to the police briefing, he operated a business involving religious preaching and maintained social media accounts dedicated to religious discourses.
Sinha said the victim was herself a social media influencer with a public profile and had come into contact with him, after which a friendship developed between them. According to police, the two initially engaged in extensive conversations under the guise of discussing religious matters. The officer said that as the friendship progressed, the accused allegedly began crossing boundaries and speaking inappropriately to the woman.
Police said that after the woman severed contact, the accused allegedly began creating multiple fake social media accounts in her name. Investigators said these accounts featured morphed images generated from the victim’s profile photographs and were used to impersonate her online.
Multiple Fake Accounts and AI Generated Content
According to the police, at least eight to ten fake social media accounts were created in the victim’s name. Sinha said the accused used artificial intelligence to generate videos and explicit images not only of the victim but also of her mother and maternal aunt, and posted them through those accounts.
The police said the harassment continued for five to six months. During that period, the accused allegedly created more than 100 fake videos and images related to the victim while continuing to operate multiple impersonation accounts. Sinha also said the accused would contact the victim and assure her that he would help get her account reinstated, even as the harassment continued.
The case ended with the victim filing a complaint, after which police arrested the accused. The Ahmedabad Police said the arrest reflected the purpose of Mission Cyber Rakshika, which combines enforcement with public awareness to counter the misuse of digital tools, including artificial intelligence, in crimes targeting women online.
