The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), Meerut, along with a Computer Operator working in the same office, in a bribery case involving an alleged demand of ₹6,000. The arrests were made on 7 May 2026, while the case was formally registered on 6 May 2026.

Bribe Allegedly Demanded Over Show Cause Notice

According to CBI officials, the case came to light after a complaint alleged that illegal gratification was being demanded for the revocation of a Show Cause Notice issued to the complainant. It is alleged that the demand was communicated through the Computer Operator on behalf of the Superintendent.

Following the complaint, the CBI initiated a preliminary verification and subsequently registered a case. Based on the findings, the agency planned a trap operation to catch the accused red-handed. Surveillance was intensified and a controlled operation was executed to confirm the demand and acceptance of the bribe.

During the trap operation, the Computer Operator was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting the bribe amount on behalf of the Superintendent. After the successful operation, both the Superintendent and the Computer Operator were taken into custody.

Both Accused Arrested Under Corruption Law

The CBI stated that both accused individuals have been arrested under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further investigation is currently underway to determine the full extent of the alleged misconduct and whether any additional individuals or systemic involvement exists.

Investigating officers indicated that initial evidence suggests the possibility that this may not be an isolated incident. The agency is examining whether similar practices or irregularities exist within the department, which could point to a broader pattern of corruption. As a result, a detailed investigation is ongoing.

The CBI reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in government functioning. It emphasized that strict action will be taken against any public servant found involved in corrupt practices, regardless of rank or position. This operation is being seen as part of ongoing efforts to curb corruption in public offices.

Records and Communication Trails Under Scrutiny

The arrests have triggered internal concern within the department, as the allegations involve both a senior official and a subordinate employee. Investigators are now analyzing official records, communication trails, and digital evidence to establish the sequence of events and identify any additional links.

Authorities have confirmed that both accused have been formally taken into custody and legal proceedings have been initiated. The investigation is expected to continue in multiple directions, including scrutiny of administrative procedures related to the issuance and disposal of show cause notices.

Officials also suggested that further revelations may emerge as the investigation progresses, potentially widening the scope of the case. The agency is also assessing whether similar complaints have been received in the past involving the same office or personnel.
