The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Unit has busted a large network that allegedly used deepfake videos and Indian Premier League content to lure users into illegal betting and fake investment schemes, removing 184 social media profiles and 801 paid advertisements linked to the operation.
Fake Profiles Used to Push Betting Content
According to the visible report, fraudsters exploited the popularity of the IPL by circulating match predictions and “sure-win” tips on social media. They also created deepfake videos that falsely showed celebrities endorsing betting platforms and apps. Many users were allegedly drawn in by promises of quick profits, especially during the cricket season when interest in match-related content was high.
Officials identified 184 profiles on Facebook and Instagram that were promoting such content. These accounts reportedly ran 801 paid advertisements offering high returns, bonuses and referral commissions. The advertisements targeted vulnerable users, including youngsters and first-time investors, increasing the risk of financial loss and data theft.

Police Register Six FIRs
Police moved to take down the identified profiles to stop the spread of misleading content. The report says six FIRs were registered against those involved in the network as part of the crackdown.
Cyber patrol operations also helped authorities identify and remove 427 profiles and 1,903 advertisements linked to similar scams. Investigators are now tracking the people behind the network and following the money trail. Officials have warned that strict legal action will follow against those responsible for creating, circulating or promoting such fraudulent content.
The police action highlights the growing use of manipulated videos and sports-related online promotions to target unsuspecting users. The visible report indicates that the fraudsters used a mix of fake celebrity endorsements, betting claims, and investment offers to make the scams appear credible.
Public Advisory Issued
The Cyber Crime Police urged citizens to stay alert and avoid trusting advertisements that promise guaranteed profits. People were also warned against opening unknown betting or investment links, particularly those circulated through social media platforms.
Officials cautioned that celebrity endorsement videos may be deepfakes and stressed that online betting is illegal in Telangana. Citizens were asked to report suspicious activity through the helpline 1930 or the official portal.
