The principal of an inter college in the Bewar area of Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district has been arrested for allegedly embezzling Rs 16.78 lakh meant for minority scholarships, while the college manager remains absconding.
Scholarship Funds Released for 285 Students
District Magistrate Indramani Tripathi said the Minority Welfare Department had released Rs 16,78,500 in 2021-22 to KPS Inter College, Dodapur Tilyani, for scholarships meant for 285 registered students. The alleged irregularity surfaced after a complaint, following which the department began an inquiry in 2025.
The inquiry found that the students shown as beneficiaries did not exist. It also found that the mobile numbers submitted for the alleged students were fake and that students listed on the college rolls were in fact studying at other institutions.

Inquiry Found No Scholarship Distribution Records
During the inquiry, no records related to scholarship distribution were found at the college. Statements from teachers were also cited in support of the findings.
The inquiry thus pointed to an alleged diversion of scholarship funds that had been sanctioned for minority students but could not be linked to genuine beneficiaries or valid institutional records.
FIR Registered, Manager Still Absconding
Based on a complaint lodged by an assistant clerk of the district Minority Welfare Department, an FIR was registered at Bewar police station on July 20, 2025 against principal Shashibhushan Singh and manager Priyanshu Pratap Singh for alleged embezzlement of scholarship funds meant for 285 minority students.
Police later arrested the principal from his residence on Thursday night. Efforts are continuing to trace the manager, who remains absconding.
