Paris: Billionaire Elon Musk has come under legal scrutiny as Paris cyber crime authorities have summoned him for questioning on Monday. The action is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged circulation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and deepfake content on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Former X CEO Linda Yaccarino has also been called for a voluntary interview in connection with the case.
Paris Investigators Turn Up the Heat on Musk and X
According to French prosecutors, the investigation began in January 2025, followed by raids at X’s offices in France in February. Authorities allege that serious lapses were found in the platform’s algorithmic systems and content moderation mechanisms, which failed to prevent the spread of illegal and harmful content.
A key focus of the investigation is X’s artificial intelligence system, Grok AI. Allegations suggest that the AI system generated posts that included Holocaust denial content, which is considered a criminal offence under French law. Investigators are also examining claims that Grok contributed to the creation of non-consensual sexual deepfake images.

CSAM and Deepfake Allegations Put Platform Under Harsh Spotlight
French authorities further stated that there are indications of possible bias in the platform’s algorithm and potential manipulation in its data processing systems. The probe also includes whether adequate moderation measures were in place to prevent the dissemination of content involving minors.
Musk and Yaccarino have been summoned in relation to their leadership roles at the time when the alleged incidents occurred. Linda Yaccarino served as CEO of X from May 2023 to July 2025. However, it remains unclear whether both will appear in person before the French authorities.
Grok AI Controversy Adds a Dangerous New Twist to the Probe
The case has also escalated into an international dispute. Reports suggest that French prosecutors have alerted the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), alleging that the controversy could be linked to attempts to influence or inflate the market valuation of X and its AI affiliate xAI, ahead of a potential merger and listing plans expected around 2026.
However, the US Department of Justice has refused to cooperate, calling the French action an interference in freedom of expression. This has further heightened legal and diplomatic tensions between France and the United States over the investigation.
Legal, Political and AI Accountability Questions Collide in France
Meanwhile, the media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has filed a fresh complaint against X. The organization alleges that the platform has repeatedly amplified misleading and false information, despite repeated warnings and requests for removal. RSF argues that such actions violate the public’s right to access reliable information.
Experts believe the case goes beyond content moderation issues and raises broader concerns about accountability in AI-driven platforms. The use of systems like Grok AI has particularly drawn attention, with European regulators expected to adopt stricter oversight frameworks for artificial intelligence tools operating on large social media platforms.
As the investigation continues, the Paris cyber crime unit is expected to intensify its probe into X’s operational systems, algorithmic design, and decision-making structure. Further developments regarding Musk’s and the company’s potential legal exposure are anticipated in the coming days.
