Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh): In a major breakthrough, police in Kanpur have busted a deeply disturbing illegal kidney transplant racket allegedly operated by a 12th-pass man who impersonated a medical doctor and ran an organised interstate organ trafficking network for a prolonged period. The case has triggered a wider investigation into a suspected criminal syndicate operating across districts and states.
The main accused, identified as Rohit from Ghaziabad, has been arrested in connection with multiple illegal transplant cases. Investigators revealed that he had no formal medical qualification or training but successfully posed as a doctor to gain access to hospitals and operation theatres. He reportedly wore medical aprons and carried a stethoscope to maintain the illusion of legitimacy while moving freely among hospital staff.

Following his arrest, police recovered several photographs and digital evidence showing the accused inside hospital premises and even operation theatre environments. In some visuals, he is seen in restricted medical areas, raising serious concerns about how an unauthorised individual could gain repeated access to sensitive surgical spaces.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the operation was not conducted by a single individual. Police sources indicate that the racket involved multiple associates who helped arrange kidney donors, recipients, and medical setups for illegal procedures. These facilitators allegedly acted as brokers, targeting vulnerable individuals in financial distress and those in urgent need of medical treatment.
Authorities further stated that several members involved in the network had no formal medical education but were still engaged in critical surgical-related activities. The gang allegedly relied on deception, fake identities, and financial inducements to run an illegal organ trade operation, putting multiple lives at serious risk.
Investigators also found evidence suggesting that several patients who underwent kidney transplant procedures linked to this racket later died. Officials believe the deaths were caused by poor surgical conditions, lack of medical expertise, and absence of proper post-operative care, highlighting the extreme danger posed by such illegal operations.
So far, around 10 individuals connected to the broader network have been arrested. Police said Rohit is believed to be a key operator who coordinated between brokers and handlers responsible for arranging donors and recipients. These intermediaries allegedly targeted economically weaker individuals by promising money or medical assistance in exchange for participation.
Officials suspect that the racket is not limited to Kanpur alone and may have connections extending to other districts and states. Digital communication records, mobile data, and financial transactions are currently being analysed to trace the full extent of the network and identify additional suspects involved in the operation.
The case has exposed serious loopholes in medical oversight and regulatory enforcement related to organ transplant systems. Experts say such criminal groups exploit desperation among patients and financially vulnerable individuals, making them easy targets for exploitation and fraud in high-demand medical services.
Authorities have assured strict legal action against all individuals involved in the illegal network, including those who acted as facilitators or provided logistical support. Investigations are also underway to determine whether any hospital or clinic knowingly or unknowingly assisted in the illegal procedures.
