New Delhi: A recent comprehensive analysis has revealed that among the 229 sitting Rajya Sabha MPs, 31 are billionaires, while 73 have declared criminal cases in their affidavits. The report, prepared by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch, provides updated insights into the financial status, criminal background, and other relevant details of the MPs.

According to the report, one Rajya Sabha seat from Jharkhand is currently vacant, and the affidavits of three MPs were unavailable, so they were not analysed. The study also includes 37 recently elected members.

Assets Overview and Distribution

The analysis shows that the total declared assets of the 229 MPs amount to ₹27,638 crore, with an average asset value of approximately ₹120.6 crore per MP. Among them, 31 MPs have declared assets exceeding ₹100 crore. Within major parties, six MPs have assets above ₹100 crore, while several others from different parties also fall in this category.

The MP with the highest declared assets has over ₹5,300 crore, followed by two others with assets of ₹5,053 crore and ₹2,577 crore, respectively. At the other end, the MP with the lowest declared assets has around ₹3 lakh, followed by others with approximately ₹5 lakh and ₹9 lakh in assets.

Criminal Cases Overview

The report also highlights that several MPs have declared serious criminal cases in their affidavits. One MP has reported a murder case, four MPs have cases related to attempt to murder, and three have cases concerning crimes against women.

Party-wise data indicates that 27% of MPs from major parties have declared criminal cases. In other parties, this percentage ranges between 31% and 43%. Additionally, MPs from smaller parties have also disclosed criminal cases in their affidavits.

Analysis and Conclusion

The ADR and National Election Watch analysis indicates that the Rajya Sabha has a significant number of financially wealthy MPs, and a considerable number have declared criminal cases. The report underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in a democratic system.

It is noteworthy that there is no direct correlation between wealth and criminal cases, though some high-asset MPs have also declared criminal cases. Experts suggest that disclosure of MPs’ financial and legal status is crucial for voters to make informed decisions and strengthen the democratic process.

The report also emphasizes the need for regular updates and transparency in affidavits, ensuring that the public has accurate information about MPs’ financial and legal backgrounds. The analysis of Rajya Sabha MPs’ assets and criminal records is being viewed as a significant step toward accountability and oversight in the legislative process.
