New Delhi | Indian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inspector accused of attempting to extort ₹2 crore from a resident of South Delhi by allegedly threatening him with a fabricated corruption complaint.
The case, which surfaced through a complaint filed at the Maidangarhi police station, has led to both a formal criminal case and an internal departmental inquiry. Officials say the allegations have raised serious questions about potential misuse of authority within India’s premier federal investigative agency.
According to police records, the accused officer has been identified as Deepak Falswal, who is alleged to have approached the complainant earlier this year while claiming that a CBI case had been registered against him.
The complaint alleges that the officer demanded a large payment in exchange for avoiding legal trouble.

Allegations of Threats and Demands
According to the complaint filed with police, the alleged incident began on January 22, when a man identifying himself as a CBI inspector visited the complainant’s residence in Mahabalipuram, Bhati Kalan, in South Delhi.
The visitor allegedly informed the resident that a complaint had been filed against him with the CBI and warned that serious legal consequences could follow.
The complainant told investigators that the man then demanded ₹2 crore, suggesting that the payment would prevent further action.
When the complainant refused to pay the amount, the accused allegedly forced him to hand over ₹50,000, and later demanded an additional ₹75,000 every month, according to the complaint.
The victim claims that the pressure did not end with the initial encounter. The accused allegedly continued contacting him through FaceTime calls, while instructing him not to communicate through regular phone calls so that his location could not be traced.
Evidence Submitted by the Complainant
The complainant has submitted audio recordings of conversations with the accused as part of the evidence provided to investigators.
Officials say the recordings form part of the material currently under examination as investigators attempt to determine whether the alleged extortion attempt occurred as described.
According to police officials familiar with the case, the accused officer also appeared at the Maidangarhi police station after the complaint was filed and submitted a written statement denying any involvement.
In that statement, he reportedly claimed that he did not know the complainant and had never met him.
Authorities have not yet publicly commented on the authenticity of the recordings or the circumstances surrounding the alleged interactions.
Case Referred to the CBI for Investigation
Following the complaint, South District Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal forwarded the matter to the CBI for further examination.
After a preliminary review, the agency concluded that the allegations appeared serious enough to warrant a formal investigation.
A regular case has now been registered against Inspector Deepak Falswal under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), which addresses cases involving public servants accused of demanding illegal gratification.
The investigation has been assigned to CBI Deputy Superintendent of Police Anmol Sachan, who will lead the inquiry.
Questions Over Misuse of Authority
The allegations come at a time when scrutiny of corruption cases involving public officials remains a sensitive issue in India.
The CBI, often described as the country’s premier investigative agency, handles some of the nation’s most prominent corruption and criminal investigations.
Cases involving alleged misconduct by officials within the agency itself are relatively rare but typically attract significant attention because of the institution’s central role in enforcing anti-corruption laws.
Officials say the investigation will examine the complainant’s evidence, communication records and any available digital traces related to the alleged interactions.
For now, authorities have indicated that the case remains under active investigation, with both criminal proceedings and departmental scrutiny expected to continue as investigators attempt to determine whether the allegations against the officer can be substantiated.
